I am not really planning on doing a Christmas thread this year about Paris since I overdid it last year, but I did make a point of going to Boulevard Haussmann this morning at 7 a.m. to be able to get some views of the Christmas windows of the two main department stores, Printemps and Galeries Lafayette.
I have to admit that ever since Printemps was sold to the Italian Rinascente group, its Christmas windows have gone downhill, but they are probably still impressive compared to the Christmas windows of a lot of other places.
In the first sequence, you will see that one of the little guys has a paralyzed leg. This is the sort of thing that is fixed each and every day before the stores open. All of those little nylon strings are so tricky.
The Printemps sequence has no music but plenty of traffic noise. I don't know if there is music later in the day, but it would be nice if there were.
As for Galeries Lafayette, this is the real deal, with music at every window. It should be mentioned that Mamma Mia is playing at the biggest theatre in Paris just a couple of blocks away from the store.
Sorry about the title and credit business on the video -- I don't know how to handle that sort of stuff or how it got there.
Finally, a special greeting to Mrs. Baz Faz who told me that she appreciated my Christmas displays last year.

Wow !! How fun that was. I enjoyed the Rockettes, the Bears and the music. The ending with the musical West Side Story display was incredible, really really fun.
The only thing I used to enjoy about my trip to the hospital in Toronto each year when I was a teenager was being lucky to be there for the Christmas parade or at least to see the window displays at The Bay and Eaton's. Magical. Cheers! Mich

Excellent videos K2. I vote for Printemps on the strength of its more involved choreography in space and its humor, but the Galeries Lafayette windows had a definite edge in look.

Both are wonderul displays but I loved the Printemps one the most. Galeries Lafayette was just a bit too busy for my liking. Thanks so much for showing us what its like to film in the pitch dark at 7am in Paris! You're a star well and truly Kerouac!

There are artistic designers to come up with the concept of the windows every year, but it is the same marionnettist who has been doing the wire animations for both stores for more than 30 years -- Jean-Claude Dehix. He is in fact the only person in the world currently doing this type of animation. He also works in New York and Hong Kong.

Thank you, Kerouac, I love both of these. The marionettist is superb and you deserve a treat for venturing out in the cold, dark Paris dawn to do this for us. You didn’t at all ‘overdo’ last year’s Christmas thread, I’ve often looked at it and sent it to many friends. Everyone loves it, now I’ll add the videos.
