I reported here a few months ago that someone had tried to access my bank account, and now for the past week I have been dealing with another incident in which someone attempted to take out an on-line loan using my personal information. The loan was denied, but this has been a real pain.
I assume the information was gathered when there was a security breach at a large company with which I do business. Criminals were able to access lists of names, addresses, and other important personal information.
If I am a bit grumpy during this holiday season this is the reason. I've spent several hours on the phone with various companies and reporting services. I have just now filed a police report and will wait for a follow-up so I can take the next step. I'm fortunate that in both cases there was no monetary loss, but I'm a Pisces. I don't like having to deal with financial matters!
Has anyone else had a problem with identity theft?

At my company, we had to deal with fraudulent transfers more than once. Some thieves seem to think that big companies make so many transfers that they don't pay attention, but we had a policy with our bank to receive a copy by fax of every transfer order that they received so that we could confirm it -- or not. The bank account was always correct of course, but the signature was often invented, which is what confirms the value of doing certain things "the old way."
Last summer my credit card account was hacked for a relatively large amount. It was a hassle, but I was refunded before I was even debited. What was strange was that the card that was hacked was the one I generally never use, except for one or two specific reasons. If my other card, which I use for dozens of things including just about all random purchases anywhere in the world, had been hacked, I wouldn't have been surprised at all.

I've had no problem at all. I find it quite easy to steal someone's identity.

Good luck with your situation HTMB. If anyone can sort it out you can.

My Bank credit card information was stolen and sold a few years ago. My Bank called me and we worked back all the charges to when and where it probably happened. There were many charges declined throughout Europe and the UK. They cancelled my card and sent me a new one that was at my Bank the next day for pick up.
I read today that Amazon account information and passwords were leaked yesterday by hackers. The article was not clear how widespread the leak was.
I hope you get all of this sorted quickly htmb, I can imagine how stressful this would be.

Thanks, everyone. A police detective has been assigned to the case. I don't expect anything to be resolved, but do hope to protect my credit status.
