It was decided today by the US Supreme Court that same sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states. That's fine with me since in spite all of the polemics in numerous countries, this new right has not shaken the fabric of any of them, even though many people seemed to think it would destroy civilisation as we know it. After all, it removes no existing rights from anybody while giving the same right to a small minority suffering from discrimination.
Nevertheless, after seeing the controversy that occurred in France, I can't help but imagine that there will be some sort of protest in certain quarters in the United States.
Just wondering if anybody thinks that it should not be a court decision but rather a legislative or referendum matter. The fact the Ireland recently impressed the world by allowing same sex marriage through a referendum would indicate that public opinion has changed very much in just a few years in a lot of countries.

Who knows what is right? Two things I have learned in life, we are all sinners and the human mind can justify anything. Scarry thought. The SCOTUS, is proving that.

in Canada (ten years ago this month) marriage equality was passed into law without a referendum because PM Jean Chretien said that the rights of a minority should never be decided by a majority vote.

And that is true for nearly everything concerning minorities.
