I will vote for you Bixa ! It is appalling that - at least on continental Europe - everybody is denigrating USA now. We just simply don't find ONE good thing being done there. 3 more years to go ... Whatagain, you do know that Trump has already registered to run again in 2020, don't you? It has been not quite a year that he is president and he has already caused so much damage, both to the USA and the world in general. The other day on the website of the Independent, I saw a headline about some former Clinton staffer saying that if Obama had cured cancer, Trump would try to bring it back.

Trump registered on Inauguration Day or the day after, as I recall. Main reason is so that he could start raising money for a re-election campaign. But I think it’s mainly so he can keep holding campaign-style “rallies” for fawning sycophants between golf outings and bizarre policy pronouncements, instead of actually governing, which he doesn’t have a clue how to do.
BTW, he won’t be around to run in 2020, I’m confidently predicting.

"Aides told the newspaper (The New York Times) they "bemoan his tenuous grasp of facts, jack-rabbit attention span and propensity for conspiracy theories."
From an article in The Independent about Trump watching 8 hours of TV every day, mostly Fox and news channels friendly to him but also CNN so he can get riled up and tweet.

I have hesitated to contribute to this thread, but feel I really must now.
I have long had a passing interest in the Muddle East. This endorsement of the Israeli grasp of Jerusalem by Mr Donuthead Trump has really added fuel to a long smouldering fire. Does he ever stop to consider his actions.

There is an important cohort among US society that voted massively for Trump. No, I'm not speaking of Jewish Americans; moreover they did not vote massively for Trump. This cohort consists of evangelical Christians, especially White ones (because Black Evangelicals remained suspicous of his racism and other historical reasons). It is something like a quarter of the population, according to a report on Radio-Canada (French-language CBC). That religion takes an apocalyptic view of this long-simmering conflict...
On the other hand, Christian leaders in Palestine and nearby countries have voiced their extreme concern about Trump's rash action...

The asshole is every uninformed dunce who ever fumed "They oughta make a law!" He sees himself as cutting through the crap and doing what needs to be done. His desire not to know all those pesky facts has been there since the beginning. This excerpt is from an article in Business Insider on December 11, 2016 -- one year ago, horribly enough: In a rare post-election interview that aired Sunday, Trump argued for why he did not need to receive regular classified intelligence briefings on national security and foreign affairs, saying he told intelligence officials to only brief him when a situation the intelligence community is monitoring changes.
"I get it when I need it," Trump told "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace.
"I'm, like, a smart person. I don't have to be told the same thing in the same words every single day for the next eight years," the president-elect added. "I don't need that. But I do say, 'If something should change, let us know.'"
Trump emphasized that Vice President-elect Mike Pence was receiving daily briefings.
"In the meantime, my generals are great — are being briefed. And Mike Pence is being briefed, who is, by the way, one of my very good decisions," Trump said, referring to his decision to pick Pence as his VP. "They're being briefed. And I'm being briefed also."
He continued:
"But if they're going to come in and tell me the exact same thing that they tell me — you know, it doesn't change, necessarily. Now, there will be times where it might change. I mean, there will be some very fluid situations. I'll be there not every day, but more than that. But I don't need to be told, Chris, the same thing every day, every morning — same words. 'Sir, nothing has changed. Let's go over it again.' I don't need that."
The interview also came days after Trump garnered widespread criticism among national security experts by condemning a Washington Post report which said that the CIA found Russian intelligence agencies meddled in the US election to help the Republican presidential nominee.
Critics argued that the president-elect was attempting to undermine the intelligence community's credibility. sourceMost of us are familiar with the heartbreaking photograph of the Frenchman weeping as his city falls to the Nazis. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that is how every thinking American feels right now as our country falls to home-made evil.

Thanks, Huckle! I came on here to happily post about that win, but you said it better than I would have.
In answer to your comments at #770, you are tragically right about that.

I have been following this all night, quite a turn around all of a sudden! I thought the Republican candidate, Moore, was going to win but as the final votes were coming in it quickly changed to Doug Jones, the Democrat candidate won!
Moore did not concede, he told his supporters that there would most likely have to be a recount because their State law dictates that must happen when the vote is as close as 0.5% but the vote difference was 1.5%. Maybe he was having a hard time accepting his defeat.

The BBC correspondent's take on the news is that it's too early to tell whether it's the beginning of an anti-Trump wave or simply that Moore was such a flawed candidate. Mind you, flawed candidates don't seem to lose every time. But it's certainly good news.

Bit of twitter fun - but some horse-lovers are also saying the Moore is an incompetent and cruel horseman, on top of everything else. Jerking Sassy's head around by the bit hurts her.

One area where Trump IS exceeding past presidents (including Obama) is in appointing new federal judges. This is not a good thing, as these are lifetime appointments and the people he’s choosing are much younger (and necessarily less experienced) and far more conservative than typical judicial appointments. And some are just UNqualified. But the GOP likes them because they will rubber stamp their sick agenda. Sad.

I really feel sad for Americans now. It will take decades to get back to the principles your forefathers fought for. The name of Trump will become a memento of evil.

Yes, but under a Presidential system the executive has far more power than in a Parliamentary one. Tony Abbott and Stephen Harper could be fairly horrid as well, especially in terms of environmental issues and related issues of Indigenous rights, but they are gone.
How did that guy Petersen ever graduate law school? Even if he doesn't work in that field of law, he should know what questions would be asked (in general) and how to study for an exam.

It isn’t just Trump, the Congress has a lot to answer for. What I meant was the Congress has its own selfish reasons for wanting to keep Trump in office though it’s clear he suffers from delusions if not outright dementia. Once they’ve passed their stinky tax cut for the wealthy, they will begin thinking about saving their own skins before the 2018 midterm elections. The House of Representatives could at any time vote to impeach this unsuitable probably criminal president, and the Senate could vote to convict him. Alternatively, a majority of the President’s cabinet plus the Vice President could vote to remove him under the 25th Amendment, as unable to perform the duties of the POTUS.

BTW, the White House has announced that Trump will be undergoing a complete physical early in 2018. Some see this as a pretext for him to resign for medical reasons, saving face, saving the GOP, and perhaps ending the inquiries into his Russian connections and finances.

BTW, the White House has announced that Trump will be undergoing a complete physical early in 2018. Some see this as a pretext for him to resign for medical reasons, saving face, saving the GOP, and perhaps ending the inquiries into his Russian connections and finances. I have read about an upcoming physical in early 2018 but I had no idea people have been thinking it could be a pretext for his resignation, that is interesting point of view. With reports of Paul Ryan considering his political future, I think there are quite a few politicians trying to figure out their best way of getting as far away from the results of the Special Prosecutor findings, especially Mr. Trump. I read yesterday that next week the White House lawyers and the Special Prosecutor team are to have a meeting. It would be interesting to know who requested the meeting, are the White House lawyers trying to find out information or does the Special Prosecutor have something to inform them of? The past few days there has been reporting on Republicans trying to end the House and Senate investigations in the next few weeks and conclude that since they have no evidence of collusion the Special Prosecutor is no longer necessary. They seem too anxious to get rid of this investigation. I only get watch CNN, I do not get Fox News, but from what I see of Fox News on-line feels like desperate reporting attempts to discredit the staff of the Special Prosecutor, the FBI and the Justice Department but nothing I have seen/read is a credible defense to two people being arrested and two people admitting guilt in regards to this investigation. I read on-line publications to try to get a balance of all positions, some seem out right ridiculous, but I try to keep an open mind.

Can we call it lying when it comes out of the happily ignorant, hate-filled mouthpiece of the spiteful shit in the White House?
Hoekstra's "qualifications" as ambassador to the Netherlands are summed up in the linked article:
He served as a Republican congressman for a decade and a half .... ... Hoekstra is opposed to same-sex marriage and gay rights. In Congress, he voted repeatedly to limit women's rights to abortion. He supports the death penalty and has argued passionately that refugees are a threat to European security. Hoekstra has given several talks at the anti-Islam American Freedom Alliance, which has also hosted Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders.

I don't know what's real and what is nonsense anymore. President Trump's unpredictable behaviour on the World stage has to be fairly high on the list of reasons why the world feels so unstable now. To a certain extent I can sympathise with Americans who feel that they are expected to be 'Bank of Mum and Dad' to the rest of the world, especially when there is a need to improve the lot of their own population.
Trouble is...Trump doeesn't seem to be that bothered about helping Americans in need, whilst giving tax breaks to billionaires!
(our lot are fairly crap too)
