I am afraid this has been going on a long time. I have a picture of my father sitting behind his machine gun in 1919. He had been sent out to India where his background as a tailor suited him to operating and cleaning a machine gun, from there he was sent to a place he called”Mespot”, in real life Mesopotamia. When we had chased the Turks out, the Kurds rose up against us demanding to have their own Kurdistan, which the big conference setting up Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, et al had denied them.
My father told the story about how they were marched through the night to set up their guns at dawn near to where the Kurdish army was camped.then when the Kurds challenged them in the morning they were routed, and so the unfortunate Kurds find themselves stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.

This really belongs in 'On this day' but I can't find it.
Anyway this day in 1953 I was serving in the RAF as a night fighter nav and our squadron was doing a temporary detachment to Habbaniya in Iraq. We were detailed for two flights, the first says 'Sector recce Mosul, Ruwandiz' nad was so we knew the country in that area because Ruwandiz was near one of the passes between Iraq and Iran. The second was "Sector recce Kirkut, Penjwin Khanaqin" which has a relevance to my fathers service detailed above. Kirkut is a major town at the centre of the northern Iraqi oilfield but in 1919 was the town for which the Kurds were heading when they were intercepted by that battle and the route they were following was along the road from Sulamaniya to Kirkut which we were flying over.
When recently I read a book about this I realised we had passed over the scene of my fathers service, most odd, because it has absolutely damn all to do with Mr Trump. Although as we all know, the whole world is illuminated by his wisdom arse.

I guess you and your dad didn't have "bone spurs" or whatever it was in the orange oaf's case.

I read today that one of Trump's announced peeves was that Renault was importing too many cars to the United States. Renault stopped importing cars to the United States in 1989.

Trump announces a huge victory today. US special forces cornered ISIS leader Al Baghdadi, who killed himself in a dead-end tunnel leading from the compound he was in by detonating a suicide vest, but was positively ID’d by DNA from the pieces that remained. Three of his children were with him when he detonated himself, and they were lost as well, as were two women, presumably his wives, also wearing suicide vests but not detonated. Only US casualty was an injured “canine”. Trump reports Al Baghdadi was crying and screaming like a baby when he was cornered...

Sounds like a great victory, doesn't it? I guess that's why Trump felt a need to tell the world himself instead of leaving it to his press secretary.

He doesn't have a press secretary any more, does he? He does all his announcements standing outside with a helicopter rotor as background noise.

I remember the days of the chant "Hey hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?" I am perplexed that our millenials have not found something to chant about Trump.

Trump said the world is a better place without Al Baghdadi. Doubtless true, but it would also be a better place without Trump, Bolsonaro and several other "leaders".

The Russians are saying they don't have any confirmation yet and I heard a French journalist on the radio saying that so far, other than Trump, there is no official, fact-checked, confirmation that al Bagdadi is dead. He also said that insulting the guy you have had killed is not right.

I immediately thought about the whole idea of actual confirmation. It seems to me that they have announced the death of all sorts of ISIS leaders in the past who turned up not to be dead at all.

Did I actually hear that Trump was saying Russia was FARTHER from the US than Iraq or Syria? Has he never heard of the Bering Strait?

If only....I would love to return to Earth in 60 years time to see how history has told of the time of the orange pig and the Brexit shambles. I would definitely wear a Kevlar bullet-proof suit while in USA, and take food and clothes for the poor kiddies in UK.

Trump made an unforced error. Appearing before a crowd that wasn’t pre-screened to adore him. The booing at the World Series baseball game when his image appeared on the Jumbotron must be messing with his mind!
Learning he’s NOT our ”favorite president” after all.

I saw that most of the crowd at the stadium were wearing red caps, but they did not appear to be the same model as he has promoted.

Joy of joys, he's due to visit us again, for the NATO summit, the week before the election. Be of good cheer, Patrick. The sight of him shambling along, stepping on his long red tie, then speaking and stepping on his forkéd tonguge, should make you all feel marginally better about Boris Johnson.

There are rules about inherited nationality. It did not pass through women (as it did through men) until well after Trump was born. So he doesn't have Scottish citizenship and unless the Scots really are ready to sell citizenship (like Malta, Cyprus and some others), then he's probably not going to be able to move there.

Nobody has Scottish citizenship (yet, though I have got a copy of my Scottish grandfather's birth certificate, just in case). It is possible for investors/entrepreneurs with the right amount of money to get a visa to live in the UK (and for their money to work in the UK) for several years, and ultimately to settle, but to get citizenship from there, you have to have actually lived in the UK for a specified period of time and not to have spent too much time outside the UK. So that probably woudn't work for him, even if there weren't character issues to be taken into account (the fact of having been found guilty of "high crimes and misdemeanours", albeit by a political rather than judicial body, may well have some weight, to put it mildly). Well, as for his US citizenship, he’s recently changed his state residency from New York to Florida. Lucky us. :-(
