I thought I'd put the Aleppo cat-rescuer story here. A kind and heroic man has taken in around 100 homeless cats (strays, as well as pets abandoned by their owners who have left the beleaguered city … or been killed, though he doesn’t mention that. www.bbc.com/news/av/magazine-37453081/the-cat-man-of-aleppo

That is very touching. I hope he has veterinarian friends who will spay & neuter. Those cats seem to be subsisting on rice -- it must be very difficult for him economically. I misted up when he said, "All my friends have left. These cats are my friends."

There seems to be an Italian agency helping him (sign) but I don't know if they'd consider the city safe enough now to send in vets.
If not, he'll have several hundred cats soon... Normally refuges for stray dogs and cats do spay and neuter.

In Thailand, both cats and dogs seem to eat rice almost exclusively, although I think that there is some meat or fish broth on it.
Of course in Islam, everybody knows that dogs are haram -- sinful and unclean -- so I guess that they can go to hell.

I have an Algerian friend who had a dog there, whom he loved very much. Of course he was a harcore secularist there and a refugee here, against what were those idiots called, the FIS? So long before ISIS. I have another friend whose entire human family was slaughtered by the FIS (if that was the name)... He has remade his life here, but harbours a deep and enduring sadness.
Bixa don't fret, the first friend's dog died of old age; the fundie bastards didn't slaugther him.

Of course in Islam, everybody knows that dogs are haram -- sinful and unclean -- so I guess that they can go to hell. This is purely anecdotal, so proves nothing, but in Istanbul all the street dogs had been fixed (they had red tags in their ears to show it) and were all plump and healthy. Thanks for that reassurance, LaGatta!

Obviously, places like Istanbul and the Maghreb where Islam is contested and/or relaxed do not have problems with loving dogs. Try the Arabian peninsula as a contrast.
