Very much looking forward to this report's unfolding. So far it appears that you managed to find Paris in Portugal!

Castanhas - very close to the Spanish word no doubt others are familiar with = chestnuts. Assadas is the same similarity = roasted. Underneath means 'hot and good'. I think the picture on the cart is a good clue.

I have sometimes found hot roasted chestnuts like those a great comfort in chilly cities.

Oh goody! I'm quite interested in this city. Castanhas is close enough to the Italian, and any American who has had a carne asada burrito will get assadas.

The buildings are in exuberant contrast with each other. Yes, indeed! Looks like it's pretty cold there, judging by what people are wearing. Well, except for that one guy in just a pullover sweater. You were probably wearing something like a short-sleeved Hawaiian shirt. I'd probably have bought some hot chestnuts to put in my pockets.

I was in Lisbon a few years ago, maybe 2016, but I don't think I did a report on it. As for glancing at the pastries, I had to be dragged away from them. Did Pasteis de Nata feature at all in your stay?

I think the picture on the cart is a good clue. Castanhas is close to châtaigne in french and is used in slang as ´ castagne in the sense of a fight whilst une châtaigne can also mean a hit - or a ´ mandale ´.

I also would have thought you would guess castanhas. Anyway, I really like Lisbon -- have been there twice, one in July, once in October. But last time was in 2007. I don't remember all the large graffitti on the buildings but do remember being struck by the fact that they kept a lot of facades of rather grand buildings and restored behind them.
We stayed right near Rossio station.
Anyway, looking forward to more pics -- it's a city I like a lot, although like so many other places, it's becoming too popular.

I have never been to Lisbon, mainly because of one particularly personal drawback, but would really like to go one day. In the meantime looking forward to enjoying seeing more through this thread.
( PS Ive not re - checked Rikita's thread but I think I remember that she posted from the castle that you get a glimpse of in one of your images.)

When I mentioned I'd been at the airport in Lisbon last year, I got told several times that I should have had a poke around in the city. Looks like they were right.

I'm sad not to have been to Portugal. I have friends in Porto (professors). Some of my friends in France go there every year. Fresh fish and good white wine!
The tartelettes called "broa" look like natas, but here broa refers to bread, and in particular a kind of bread made with white maize as well as some wheat, which is particularly good for mopping up seafood stews and braises.
Portugese cuisine can be very simple and straightforward, but also very good.

Oooooo ~ I love that backlit picture looking toward the arch, with all the lights(?) hanging over the street.
Ditto that first edge-of-the-continent one, and it's so particularly appropriate for a country that produced so many explorers.

Yes Fumobici, you should have gone in -- as you see, it's a great city and the airport is really close.

Do they have more modern trams outside the historic centre?

Yes, the outer areas have perfectly modern trams. The old ones are for the hilly areas.

That first photo of the old tram (in reply #16) could have been taken fifty years ago!
I don't know why, but nothing that's been shown so far is anything like I imagined Lisbon, making this thread a real eye-opener.
Did you not sample the pastries because of your recent bout of flu, Kerouac. I'm trying to be understanding, but am quite disappointed.

How long did you stay in Lisbon? Did you travel outside the city?
It is on my list of future January/February entry points for retirement holidays. I am more than interested now.

Did you not sample the pastries because of your recent bout of flu, Kerouac. I am not attracted to pastries. I don't eat them in France either. However, I did eat two of the iconic Portuguese custard tarts. They were all right. If you look at some of the vlogs about Lisbon, some people think that the most important thing to do in Portugal is to eat as many of those tarts as possible.

We took the #28 tram from one end to the other. Indeed in some places the street is really narrow and you have the impression that it's going to scrape the walls.

I think K2 got the tram up, photographed things whilst walking down and then posted them in the reverse order.
