Horrific and devastating. We are saddened and shocked for those murdered, their families and friends, the community, the Province and our Country. My mother is from the area, she grew up in Elderbank, about 15 minutes away from Enfield. My Nana is buried in the cemetery at St. Andrews Church. As a child we probably drove that route to Truro many times from my Nana's home to my Aunt's home where she moved to as an adult with her 4 children. We were living in P.E.I. at the time and would take the ferry over frequently to visit with my Nana and my Aunt's family. Two of my cousins and their families still live in the area.

Horrible. Things like this are incomprehensible.

Absolutely. The killer wasn't the stereotypical "loser/loner" like some earlier mass killers. It is very sad and very strange. Very quiet and peaceful places; the only city of any size is Halifax/Dartmouth. Sure, as in any small towns there can be domestic violence or young guys fighting after drinking too much, but that's about it.

The thought of shooting people in their homes is particularly disconcerting since that is the safest place that most of us can be.

Random shootings are sheer stupidity.
I have a list. A bloke beginning with T is at the top.

If the shooter has a problem that only murder can cure, at least give him/her a list of those whose continued existence cause pain and misery to many.

My list is TB. (Bolsonaro, not Boris, silly as the latter is). Both were madly orating at rallies of their supporters wanting an end to confinement. Bolsonaro had a bad dry cough. Though seriously, I don't want either killed, which would make them martyrs and spur fascist movements. I want them brought to justice. The covid-19 measures make this even more cruel, as no funerals, vigils or other collective mourning can take place - important anywhere, as I remember after the Polytechnique massacre when I was a grad student at UdM, but even more so in small towns where everyone knows everyone else: Covid and massacre in Nova Scotia

I see that the death toll has risen to 23.

That includes the gunman.
I do find odd that the RCMP used Twitter to advise people to stay inside. Why not something more official, like TV, radio and other services?

Yes that's strange bjd. Just terrible. Thank you for the link Lagatta , yes even more cruel for the community who would normally gather together to grieve.

bjd, it is very strange as Canada has a system called amber alert that takes over all the airwaves in the event of missing or abducted children. I have no idea why nobody thought to use it to help save lives in this strange and horrible case.

I have no idea why the Amber alert system was not utilized. They will be forced to explain why not, there are distraught family members who deserve and who have publicly asked for an answer to that question.
They are also now suggesting there may have been an accomplice, perhaps someone who gave him the uniform. That person may have done so without any knowledge of his plans, but they are searching for that person. It will take time, but eventually they will find information on his electronic devices, some e-mail, text, facebook or twitter post will lead investigators to unravel the circumstances it is, unfortunately, going to take time.

Re amber alerts, France has the same system as the U.S. and Canada (but with a different name) and when they started, it was explained very clearly that the one and only case in which an amber alert can be made is when someone has specifically been seen abducting a child. That's why amber alerts are very rare and are not launched every time there is a missing child -- if that were the case, everybody would stop paying attention very quickly since so many children go missing for a multitude of reasons.
However, I agree that using Twitter to warn people seems ridiculous except that it probably isn't. I look at Twitter maybe 3 times a weeks, but then again I am not a typical user. With so many people riveted to their phones all day, I'm sure Twitter reached more people total than if they had put a news crawl on television screens like for tornado warnings. The fault of this plan, though, is that this time the victims were mostly sitting quietly at home possibly watching television, and a news crawl might have saved them.

Twitter is used constantly by law enforcement agencies here to advise people of unfolding police activity. I've learned to look at the local police agency Twitter account any time something appears to be going on for that reason. I find it inefficient just because not everyone utilizes Twitter.
Has any motive for this shooting been revealed yet?

Some report say that the first murder cases were his ex-spouse and her new companion, but this must be confirmed. The whole uniform and livery fraud is very unusual and must be inspected.
