This is open to anybody who has taken photos of our masked world. I just thought I would start with a few photos taken out my window today -- people wearing masks properly, people with their masks pulled down, and all the rest. On my particular intersection, masks are not mandatory, but a lot of the people just exited the metro or the bus where they are obligatory. Sometimes, I pull mine down, too, when I get out of the metro station, especially with the heat wave.

Also a good reality check after all those blogs about the mythical Parisienne.
Hijab lady does look like a ghost...

It will be interesting to see how long this crazy new zone system works in Paris. Wear a mask on one street, remove on the next? Then slap it back on when changing to a new area or risk a hefty fine? Sounds very confusing.

Confusing for visitors perhaps, but Parisians know exactly where they are. But in any case, it is extremely likely that we are going to have an outdoor mask rule soon covering the entire country.

Even small places that are resorts are requiring masks, like Hossegor and Capbreton on the Atlantic coast. Full of tourists these days, but I imagine that things will relax when it's only locals again.

I haven't got any nice material to make a mask. I still use the one given out by the city but it's 65% polyester and makes my face awfully warm. To make it even better, I have a cold so having a runny nose as well as a mask is really a nuisance.
This morning on the radio I heard an interview with yet another epidemiologist who said masks are fairly useless outside because there is enough air and wind to keep things moving, but on the other hand, masks should be used in closed places.

I consider that masks do not do much to protect the wearer, but they do a lot to prevent the wearer broadcasting his germs to other people

That is what the specialists have always said, but that is probably the reason that a lot of people don't want to wear them. They absolutely do not care if they contaminate other people, but if the mask gives no protection to them from being contaminated by other people, what's the point? We are selfish bastards for the most part.

Cheery, are those the masks you made? They look pretty comfortable, as though they are not pressing up against the nose and mouth.
Surely a mask gives some bit of protection from people who aren't wearing masks, as well as from whatever might be floating on the air. f

We keep a package of disposable masks in the car in case we decide to stop somewhere on the way home from visiting family but we both have fabric masks for when we go shopping.
The fabric ones we bought have a thin strip sewn in to them so you can press it around your nose for a good seal which helps our glasses from fogging up, well worth the purchase! We have hand sanitizer in the car and a bag to put the masks into to dispose of or to shake into a sink full of hot water and soap at home.

We can only do our best. I see a lot of photos Kerouac took with people wearing those disposable masks. Not the best. I'm "forbidden" - translates to "persuaded" to wear a proper cloth mask. It is double and very hot but that spurs me on to get my shopping done and get the hell out of the supermarket. The ONLY safe place is in your own home. Watching TV, cooking, gardening, having tea and cake……! Stay safe everyone.

Some of our members are really quite talented. Probably the only person who could beat them would be onlyMark. Of course this can also be considered a summer fashion thread, which should shoot down all myths about Parisians being elegant all the time.

I bought my first loop-over-the-ears mask today. Just as I feared, the loops would only be adequate if my ears were on my cheekbones, instead of on the side of my head where they belong. Notice that in Kerouac's latest set of pictures, everyone wearing the plain disposable masks looks relatively comfortable, with the elastic not pulling their ears forward. The one person wearing a cloth mask -- the young woman in jeans & a white t-shirt -- has her ears pulled out. I wet the elastics on my new mask and it's outside stretched across the head and beak of my rebar flamingo, in the hope the elastic will relax enough to allow me to wear the mask comfortably. Deeply annoying.

Bixa you have my sympathy as I know exactly what you are talking about! The first lot of home-stitched masks were done by vendors here who were trying to cut corners and get as many masks as possible out of their fabric and elastic purchase. What my husband has done is cut off the bottom elastic where it puts the mask near your chin and join it to the top elastic, then wear it with the elastic UNDER your ear.. Leave the bottom loose - Try that or put new elastic on by hand sewing.

The ones I've bought here - made here by artisans and small producers - fit me fine, and I do not have tiny delicate features. I'm not unattractive, but have large features suited for the theatre more than the cinema.
There's a shop nearby that makes 100% cotton masks for $5 Cdn.

I have folded mine in a sort of 'concertina' shape, secured at the sides, do that they open up in the middle to fit around the face, but there's a large space under the nose and around the mouth...I find it more comfortable. They're still snug under the chin and over the nose.

Cheery, since you undoubtedly had to wear masks during your career, your design is very probably the most user-friendly. I always think of Oaxaca as the home of "just barely enough". Apparently that logic applies where you live, too. You can buy a skirt here with only about 10" of elastic in the waistband, so it's no surprise that people are walking around with their ears being pulled off their skulls. As far as the loops on my mask, they stretched some on the flamingo, but not enough. Yesterday evening I did this with it and it's still there as I type. We shall see. The green thing is a small flat cardboard box. The elastic is looped over it and the box closed into the drawer ~

Horrors, bixa, do they want to asphyxiate women and teenage girls?
And yet, I see far more body diversity in your Oaxaca photos.

It is true that I hesitate at times to venture far outside, as now I'm not only sneezing but sniffling. Allergies. With the heat we've had ragweed could be early.
