Last Friday (11th) my sister Peggy and I boarded a National Express Coach. Leicester to Glasgow. Almost 10 hours on a bus! We looked into trains but the cost of a 1st class fare to Grasgow was beyond our means, Peggy won't fly either so it was a bus or nothing. I thought that I'd been incredibly clever booking seats just behind the driver...thinking that we'd have lots of leg room. Big mistake. The seats were lovely leather ones but we were very cramped and uncomfortable squashed up against a large panel that backed the driver's little cabin thing.....there were 2 drivers as the trip was s long....one driver told me that his colleague will generally kip on that seat whilst the other one drives...as it was they pull out a special co-driver's seat at the front.
I was so uncomfortable that I had to beg to be moved at one of the stops...ended up in the disabled space in a very comfortable seat right at the front...good job as my poor feet were very swollen and puffy from not being able to move (despite us making sure that we did frequent exercises like clenching and unclenching leg muscles)
Anyway....our nephew picked us up the from the Buchanan street station and drove us to his sister's flat in Paisley, picking up a meal from an Indian Restarant on the way. It was so lovely to see our niece settled, she had been wanting to move to be near her brother and his family (they live nearby in Nielston) since their Mother (my sister) died in 2016...she had to wait until she could find work there..she's a social worker. Anyway...Helen (niece) has been in Paisley since Februsry in a jolly nice 2 bedroomed flat/appartment.
The following day we visitedThe Burrell Collection. I've been before but not for several years, the artefacts on show areoften changed around so only the huge statues or huge slabs of masonry are left in place. Incidentally The Burrell Collection was voted Museum of the Year....it's located in Pollock Park and admission is free.
..."The Burrell Collection is home to the 9,000-object collection of Sir William Burrell, a shipping merchant, and his wife, Constance Burrell, who were avid art collectors. Burrell bought his first painting at the age of 15 with a few shillings he had been given for a cricket bat.
The collection includes one of the most significant holdings of Chinese art in the UK, medieval treasures including stained glass, arms and armour, more than 200 of the world’s finest tapestries, and paintings by renowned French artists including Manet, Cézanne and Degas.
The museum reopened in March 2022 after a six-year refurbishment that cost £68m and was funded by Glasgow city council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Scottish and UK governments. It is on a par with the National Gallery and the V&A in London."...(quote from The Guardian Newspaper)
I tried to photograph the information plaques as well as the objects, but missed many. A lot of the photos didn't turn out very well because I was too busy wandering around in awe and delight.
Bored now...there's loads more to see there.
