We all come across incidents in our daily lives or read things that make us wonder how some people manage to walk around in the world. Usually seeing, hearing, or reading such things makes us want to say, "Can you believe this shit?!" to someone else. Here is a whole thread to do just that.
I was inspired to create this thread by a recipe I just read in the NYTimes cooking section. It's a rather simple recipe calling for twelve ounces of spaghetti, among other ingredients. The recipe sounded good, so I went down to reader comments to see their verdicts.
The last comment was by someone named Laura, who said:
Pasta is sold in 16 ounce boxes. Are cooks supposed to weigh the right amount of pasta for these recipes and discard the rest?
If that doesn't make you despair about humanity, know that two other readers marked her comment as helpful.

Obviously there have been a lot of lobotomies that you didn't know about, Bixa.

It would have been better for the recipe to scale up all the ingredients by one-third, which would have made the pasta a nice even full package.

You mean American portions?

People who couldn't figure out how to get hold of 12 ounces of spaghetti from whatever size package shouldn't be cooking. Also, does anyone really weigh raw pasta? I think normal people just eyeball the amount needed.

I often weigh pasta, just like I weigh a lot of foods on a scale when cooking, but I don’t think it’s a very common thing to do in the US.

I read a sper on how many people can not calculate a rebate f xx%. They go to the cashier and just hope they have enough money.

It isn't the difficulty of eyeballing it, it's the leftover quarter torn open package you're left with (easier with DeCecco boxes!), which isn't easy to find a use for if you like using a lot of different types of dry pasta.
My mother used a triple beam balance like from chemistry lab for measuring weight in grams as called for in Euro cookbooks.

You do realize that not all pasta comes in 16 oz. packages, right?
I must be some kind of pasta storage genius, as I have no problem with whatever pasta is left in the package. For one thing, I don't tear open the package since I am not a savage. For another thing, I have one of those tall canisters that I believe are meant for long pasta. I cut off the top of the bag & put it into the canister. At present I have a partially used bag of capellini in it along with a partially used bag of fettuccini. A partially used bag of spaghetti or similar would fit into the rest of the space. Were I to start using many more types of long pasta, I'd get another tall canister. I have a variety of different sized jars to store opened packages of other types of pasta, which here are mostly sold in 200 or 500 gram packages.

I have at least 5 packages of various partially used pasta at all times. It is absolutely not a problem.

Very droll I have a pasta basket in the kitchen drawer. Son and I like rigatoni, penne and fusilli but OH doesn't. We use linguini a lot and lasagne sheets. I have a tall jar for the linguini (OH prefers it to spaghetti). I very rarely use fresh pasta and have only made it from scratch once (why bother?) As for weighing pasta, I do occasionally as I tend to cook far too much...but then I love pasta so it doesnt matter really
