I had a quick lunch with a friend on Tuesday. He ordered a panino and I ordered a "beef baguette".
The panino was delivered from Italy... cannot be else, as it too soooo long! And my baguette was just what it said on the tin: 1 bit of baguette bits of dry, extremely well done, cold beef
"would you like a sauce with your meal?" I said yes. fearing the worse, I opted for "red sauce" i.e. ketchup. I should have asked if they had horseradish sauce, but completely forgot.
Our meals were served with a blob of tired mixed salad and a small portion of chips. the type K2 likes. The latter were the best part of the meal. Any scandalous food adventures on your shores?

That does indeed sound like an atrocious excuse for a meal.

I once ordered a Lasagna in a so called italian restaurant in Ireland. The oil the mince was fried in was rancid, there was not one tiny bit of tomato in the sauce and the pasta leaves were about 1cm thick because they must have been cooked for 2 hours. It was not edible. I am sure the chef had never set a foot on italian land.

In so many places, the use of spice is the lowest common denominator, in order not to offend the most delicate palate: curries that smell like curry but taste like nothing come to mind as do Chinese dishes with ginger where you wonder where the ginger went.
People who are afraid of the taste of any spice or seasoning should never order any sort of ethnic food and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves.

Just try finding decent Ethiopian cooking in Pátzcuaro México! We now have an Italian restaurant. I've seen their menu. Nothing on it that I can't cook at home.
