Dare I say it yes I did shop in a supermarket 50 yrs ago.
Was only young
.I remember biscuits(cookies)were sold from tins by the pound weight,
eggs were loose and placed in brown paper bags,
fruit and veg were sold from truck that travelled around the streets,
baker came on horse and cart as well as the ice man
Oh dear that does make me old

It pains me to think of all the corner groceries that were here when I first moved here. And every other one had some specialty, this one olive salad, another known for their butcher, another for their specialty "poboys"... All locally owned and operated by generations of families.

I remembering being very upset when the bread man with his horse and cart didn't come anymore.. same with the fruit and veggie truck.
I think I was very very young when the freshly baked bread cart was around but it is one of my fondest memories. Not sure why he only came to my grandmothers house and not my mums though. Better check on that while I can. We all lived in the same town. Probably my mother didn't have as good taste as Nanna and wanted rubbish plastic bread.

When I was very small, there was still a milkman.
Of course, in my grandparents' village in France, there was the grocery truck, the bakery truck, the butcher truck, etc., on various days of the week. Now there is a hypermarket down the road...

milkmen are making a comeback here in the UK. In these modern days of fickle consumerism (and I am extremely fickle), I would not want the pressure of a milkman coming by every day to see if I wanted something. In collective places like schools or restaurants or hotels, it is not a bad idea (unless the milkmen are obtaining their supplies from the same place as everybody else).
