have been seen tonight, and a great view of Saturn with rings and everything. As well as my daughters' first iridium flare, and tracking a satellite across Taurus. And my son didn't get to bed until 10.30pm. He was well chuffed ! Here : www.starparty.org/

Oh my goodness! Did you all have telescopes or binoculars? What a great thing to have in your area. Hope lots of people turned out.

You should have seen the size of some of the 'scopes !
There were thousands and thousands of pounds worth of lenses there, and everybody was really friendly letting us look through them and showing us what to look for, etc. etc.

What a great experience for the kids. It must have been such a revelation, especially for the little guy, to see what all is out there.
If you've got a decent pair of binoculars, take the kids out one clear night to somewhere with no artificial light. Take a blanket and you all can lie on your backs and see quite a show.

If only I could find the bleedin' camera, I'd show you a pic of the kids next to a couple of decent 'scopes.
We have a smallish telescope from the '60's ...

I would think all your family would have would be gyroscopes.

Telescopes are a magical instrument of childhood. Even just looking at the moon through one makes a fantastic impression -- or at least it did when I was a kid. Children nowadays grow up in a world a incredible synthetic images, so some of them might be harder to impress.

Um, I think you're referring to your kaleidescope.

No, I'm talking about kids who might say, "The moon? Big deal. I saw robots blow up the moon last week on television. It was cool."

We went to an exhibition a few weeks back (well, february) of the original moon pictures taken by NASA between the first moon landing and the early 70's. Fascinating. Both kids are entranced with the moon, and Little Miss G was so excited to see Saturn through a 'scope so that it looked 'real' !
