Even though this has really happened to certain former stars, I would like to mention a recent French media event in which 4 big stars (no, not international superstars) accepted to sit and beg on the steps of the metro, as so many of the homeless do already.
Actress Fiona Gelin, actor Bruno Wolkovitch, singer Lara Fabian and writer Marek Halter wore their oldest clothes and sat there with a begging cup, to see what would happen, to see if anybody would recognize them. Lara Fabian (who is a really big star in France) even went so far as to start singing.
Absolutely nobody recognized them, and they received almost no coins. People do not look at the homeless. They totally refuse to look at them, and even if the person is a big star in a popular television series or a singer who has sold millions of records, they suddenly do not exist anymore. Even the writer, Marek Halter, has been on television constantly and just about anybody in France can recognize a photo of him, but nobody looked.
If you ever find yourself begging on the street, you can fully expect to become completely invisible.

Wow ~ and good for those stars willing to do this to make a point.
One often hears that people with terminal illnesses find that some they'd considered friends no longer stay in touch. If you don't see something, I guess it doesn't exist.
Last night you posted a photo spread on the slums of Mumbai. The comments were horrifying and illuminating. One person even went so far as to say that if the inhabitants would clean up around their area, it wouldn't be so bad -- that they choose to live that way. Yes, the commenter meant squatters in the garbage dump.
