Ever taken a trip to nowhere? You thought you were leaving, bag was packed, but you missed the plane or changed your mind, maybe the car broke down. Sometimes you just changed your mind for a reason, maybe not even a reason.
Can’t go back to work, don’t want to go back to work and no other plans. Fridge is empty because you were supposed to be away. Restless and unhappy or not even unhappy, just nothing on your mind and nothing to do. Cleaning house is not an option and maybe you even tidied up before not leaving.
Your friends think you’re gone and that’s just as well. You don’t want to explain why you’re not gone or hear their advice about what to do. Part of leaving was to get away from them too and the same old conversations day in day out. They’ve written you out of their lives for two weeks, no reason to change that.
Sit in the silence with the lights off. Maybe you’ll find out what to do.

That's rather tempting. Have you actually done that Komsomol.
Are you Russian?

You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.
Franz Kafka

Why go out? Cans in the cupboard, delivery food, a kid holding a paper bag scratching zits and waiting for a tip. Don’t know if they thought life would be like this when they came from Ecuador, escaping bananas and coffee. Is El Pollo Loco their future? Stinking of fry oil that should have been changed yesterday.
Music coming through the wall, the South Central stuff full of bitches and dope but I’m not going after the box in the closet yet. That has to last.

You're either VERY high, or trying to make a point. I've yet to work out which one ......

If you come here to New Orleans during hurricane season and one does hap it's way here and you choose to stay you will have a very near experience. We did not leave for Gustav last Sept.Your description is very very close to mine. As there was no power for a week the silence was a rather pleasant experience. It's amazing how much ambient sound we are surrounded by. The occassional tinkering on a nearby piano, the birds... So many of my friends were stuck on interstates at each others throats.

I once made a trip to practically nowhere. Also, without achieving what I'd set out to do.
What happened was that I decided to buy an Interrail pass on the spur of the moment. Hearing from a friend that they were cheaper in Holland, I hitch- hiked there. To a place called Nimwegen, not a very spectacular place. But I reached it before the train station closed, so went up to the counter with money, passport photo and passport. Only to hear the lady say that I could only buy that pass in my home country. By then it was too late to hike back so I looked for a park to sleep. In the middle of the night the police found me and forced me into the 'Sleep Inn', even tough I told them I had no money. They didn't care, neither did the receptionist at the Inn. So I stayed and hitch- hiked back home the next morning.

I'm sure there's a novel that starts with something like this scenario, but I can't for the life of me remember any more about it.

Maybe it's the one you haven't written ......... the one "everyone has in him"?

When you DO write it, Patrick, please put in the part where the world rolls in ecstasy at your feet.

Flying standby on various airlines, I have made dozens of trips to nowhere. For short distances, I have sometimes waited from 6am until 8pm to get on a flight before giving up, and sometimes I have returned to an airport 3 days in a row without success. One of my trips to nowhere turned into a trip to somewhere completely different. I flew from Paris to Rome to pick up a flight to Addis Ababa. The flight operated 3 times a week at 1:35am. I failed to get on the flight, so I flew back to Paris at 6am. I arrived home at about 9:45am (flight + ground transportation time). I suddenly realized that I had a ticket to New York on hand on Pakistan Airlines, which had a flight at 1pm. So I went back to the airport with different baggage and flew to New York the same day, where I had a lovely time.
Oh my god, this was a terrible threadjack!

That story you told K2 some time back about ending up in was it Singapore, the middle of the night, the cabbie taking you to a rooming house? That was a kind of trip to nowhere. Your description sounded so surreal,to me anyway. I loved it.

That wasn't nowhere... that was Singapore instead of New Caledonia!

The way you described it had a nowhere (you intended to go aspect) surreal quality. It was a beautifully written story.

It was indeed a nowhere zone, but maybe we need to start a new thread about "arrivals in completely unexpected places."
