Just checked and yes I think you are right bixa. Did you notice how beautifully it has been shaped by the gardener?!

I'm surprised the hydrangea is already in bloom. They are summer bloomers here.

Did you notice how beautifully it has been shaped by the gardener?! Why yes! Indeed I did. I wonder who that sensitive and meticulous gardener might be.

In California, the red things were called bottle-brush trees.

I'm pretty sure that's their popular name everywhere. I think they're from Australian, although can't swear to it.

Some of the orchids in my patio are putting on a show. Sorry the pictures are so crappy -- from the phone, not the real camera.

In watching gardening videos, I have noticed that Americans tend to use popular names for plants while Brits tend to use more botanic terms, like callistemon vs bottle-brush, aquilegia vs columbine, etc.
Visibly your climate is really suitable for orchids, Bixa.

Americans tend to use popular names for plants while Brits tend to use more botanic terms I don't watch too many gardening videos, so am not aware of that. But you bring up an important point -- the real names are important! It seems they're doubly important on tv shows about gardening because those influence a wide audience and can get people to understand how useful it is to know the botanical names. For one thing, you can always communicate clearly with another gardener if you're both using botanical names. I have Calendula officinalis in one of the front beds. A Canadian friend asked what it was & I told her, along with the information that it is the "true" marigold. (Yes, I'm pedantic.) One of the orchids grown around here is called "flor de Mayo". In Oaxaca "flor de mayo" is the Plumeria tree. *exits soapbox*

My Dutch irises finished a couple of weeks ago. Those arum lillies are very common around here and seem to plant themselves. When we removed the hedge, lots of them appeared. They make a nice big pop of white and last for a long time.

Obviously clematises prosper in cooler wetter climates. Yours is so much more beautiful and full than any of mine.
