Today I attended the semi-annual meeting of the steering committee of my mother's nursing home, which is mostly devoted to people suffering from Alzheimer's. I was elected to represent the residents' families, while other people represent the staff, the trade unions, the social services of the city, the judicial services for residents under trusteeship, the administration, and there is also one non-Alzheimer resident who represents the residents. She is a magnificent wild card, because she speaks her mind and has no reason to be politically correct, unlike everybody else. Today she had us in stitches with her description of the meal services, and she knew the name of every cook and exactly what they were doing wrong -- or right.
We learned that the Vietnamese cook is absolutely spectacular and that the Portuguese cook is a total disaster. Since the West Indian head cook happened to be present as the union representative, he was able to take notes, and I am quite sure that some changes will be made, because the woman was able to give very precise details about overcooked potatoes and watery ravioli.
The reason for the title of this post is because the "activity" program for the rest of the year was presented, and the next activity is Mother's Day next weekend (one week later than usual this year due to Pentecost). And the big show for the residents, of which about 90% are women and over the age of 80 will be a Chippendales franchise production.
This is apparently in reaction to remarks about the Christmas show and its bare-breasted Brazilian carnival dancers which were very much appreciated by the rare men in the audience.
This is going to be interesting. I know that my mother will like it. If possible, I will take some photographs.

The mind boggles. Who was brave enough to put forth this idea, or was it presented as a joke that got taken up, then everyone said, "Why not?"
And, what will happen if some of the ladies are offended by the Chippendale dancers? Will they be helped to leave the activities area, to return for the refreshments later? Was anyone offended by the Brazilian dancers?

This does boggle, but one never knows. I am curious and anxiously await this episode. I am wondering about the administration and how they will handle the fallout from this if indeed there even is any. And are the Chippers ready for what could happen? Anything from lustful "older" women lunging for them to goodness knows what all else. What a hoot!

Whose brilliant idea was this? I bet it wasn't one of the older women. I'm sure they would prefer some music like Edith Piaf or a performance of something they can relate to. It's no secret that magazines of naked men don't sell very well compared to magazines of naked women.

I think it was the 'directrice' who made the decision. (God, I hate that bitch!) However, I do support her in this instance. These Alzheimer people need extreme visuals to evoke any sort of reaction. All of the sleepy time old stuff just bores them. My mother walks out of the traditional stuff within 2 minutes (but she has become famous for that, which means that it is not the standard behavior).
And don't forget that the age group is moving along. While my grandmother (who died almost 20 years ago) would have loved Edith Piaf or Tino Rossi songs, the current 80 year old group is more interested in people like Charles Aznavour or Mireille Mathieu. (As for my mother who lived in the US for 50 years, I know that back when she still had a mind, her favorite song was 'You're Just Too Good to be True' by Frankie Valli, which instantly reminded her of when she met my stepfather.)

I love that song too, for the same reason. Although obviously its not your stepfather it reminds me of. I hope the ladies enjoy the show as much as they did the Brazilian dancers! The thought makes me queasy though

They weren't worn for long. That isn't a resident -- that is Cruella (not her real name, just my own name for her), manager of the nursing home.

And the gentleman facing her ~~ is he not wearing any pants? Yeek. She seems to be welcoming him with open arms. And you say this event was her idea, right?
The dancers seem game and good-natured. How did the residents take the whole thing?

K2,is there any particular reason you're not telling the story of the day's events. If it was a bad experience I understand. Otherwise, you're holding us(at least some) in suspense.
