Do you eat the onions afterwards? (serious question) Yes I did eat them, Bjd. My usual reason for not including "produce" in a martini (or martini-type drink) is because I feel the flavor leaches out & concentrates into the liquid over the consumption time, resulting in an altered flavor in the last few sips. Creating that drink was an attempt to do stuff the normal way.

I made a bloody Mary this afternoon but put in a carrot stick instead of celery because I was preparing dinner using carrots. Ate it.

🤣
My mother used to have that often at restaurants.
Pronounced bloody like in good mood. Wonder if our average waiter improved the pronounciation...
Good idea for the coming lunch. A bloody mary virgin... maybe i ll just order a tomato juice.

Just guzzled a drink I've named "Vitamin CCC", created because of having freshly squeezed orange juice.
Put several ice cubes into a shaker & add:
2 oz. gin (I used Damrack because it has a pronounced citrus note) half oz. Campari half oz. Cinzano Rosso Enough orange juice to fill a 12 oz. glass
Shake vigorously & strain into the afore-mentioned glass

Sipping cognac tonight as I watch the Victoires de la Musique (the French Grammies or Brit Awards). They have reduced the number of awards this year to just 11, which I'm sure is wise since all of these shows have been bloated in recent years with more and more categories.

T. prepared Bloody Mary's for us a little while ago. He usually makes an excellent drink. Somehow, after taking one sip of it I noted a really bizarre and unusual taste. It tuns out that when he bought the vodka, he failed to note that it was cucumber and mint flavored. (the brand was Finlandia) He was so angry with himself. Both of us really hate it when they attempt to add any artificial ingredients to a perfectly fine product. (Another example is flavored coffee beans).

I don't mind Absolut Citron with a couple of ice cubes.

I opened a bottle of côtes de bourg the other day. As usual, it takes the two of us a couple of days to finish the bottle.

I don't mind Absolut Citron with a couple of ice cubes. That's about the only one I can think of that is passable.

I think I'm going to abstain from alcohol for Lent this year. Take a break until Easter.

That was always my preferred time to go on the wagon. When I lived in NO, it was always easy to find a buddy who also wanted to spend Lent that way.

Just think of it as 40 days and 40 nights without. In 2020 I abstained and ended up extending my abstinence for nine months. It was at the beginning of the heightened anxiety about "the virus" and I decided what the heck, it certainly couldn't hurt to abstain for a bit.

Anybody who wants to extend abstinence to the end of April will be delighted to hear that Ramadan starts this year on April 2nd and runs until April 30th.

I heard strange noises tonight. It wasn't mice -- it was my bottle of Grand Marnier calling out to me. That's funny Kerouac. Those strange noises seem to come out of nowhere. Have to listen closely to "the call". I went out last evening for the first time since Twelfth Nite to the local corner saloon. They have a special on wines there and I had two or was it three glasses of Graham Beck Brut Rose? It is so good! A Brut Rose blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Origin is South Africa, so I was wondering if Tod knows it.

I'm having a frivolous, girly version of a martini:
2 oz Hendrick's gin 1 oz Martini Rosso Pour over ice cubes in a shaker, then swirl & strain into a chilled glass. Drop in a nice twist of lemon peel.

Try as I might I can't seem to acquire a taste for gin unless it's disguised with something else juice or another ingredient.

I am rather surprised I wound up being a fan of gin. If you decide to try again, ask for a shot of Martin Miller's on ice. It may convert you. Yesterday I was served a drink that almost knocked me out. I was invited to some new friends' house, with the husband eager to make me his special margarita. This was hardly an offer I was likely to refuse, especially as he wanted me to watch him make it. He started with tall glasses filled with ice cubes. He began measuring, saying that he uses two ounces of tequila in each. I was eyeing his shot glasses. They were identical to votive candle glasses & I felt certain that they held more than two ounces. I expressed my reservations about being able to consume as much liquor as the finished drink would have, so my drink "only" got a shot and a half. The rest of it was controy, a tiny bit of agave syrup, & his secret ingredient: ancho chile liquor. There was no foolishness with salt on the rim & we drank it from the glasses in which it had been prepared. The tequila flavor & scent came through nicely & it was refreshingly less sweet than a standard margarita. Even though I drank it very slowly, along with a glass of water on the side, it had the kick of a mule, probably proving that my suspicion about the size of the shots was well placed.

Now that's a cocktail I could easily enjoy. (you must have meant to say salt on the rim of the glass, not ice). I do like the salt on the rim and naturally the lime).
Your "new" friends sound to be lovely hosts. Good for you especially in light of one of your good friends departing recently back to the US.

I just went to my private chapel and after my evening devotions, I took a votive candle glass to measure. It contains 8 cl. Then I took my Holland House shot glass to compare. A jigger is 5 cl.

Thanks for the feedback re: ice/salt & how much a votive glass holds. ( ) Casimira, not only were they lovely hosts, I learned that one of the wife's very favorite authors is Jim Harrison. The only jigger I had in my house was the classic double kind. Mine holds 30ml on one side & 15ml on the other. But the other day I saw a nice stainless steel one for only 55 pesos which is 2 oz on side & 1 oz. on the other, so bought it. I'm thinking I need to go get another as a gift for my margarita making friend.

Actually, the Holland House jigger has other markings on it for lesser amounts. I just checked the biggest amount.
