The Gillian Welch version of this song just destroys me -- whew, talk about the blues!
However, the original is such a deservedly monumental piece of American music, it needs to be here, too.

Sublime.
Try this experiment: before listening to the above, listen to Pavarotti singing it. Now listen to Caruso. Then go back and click on Pavarotti again.
I adore Pavarotti, but .......................................

Oooooo, romantic selections, BigIain! Love what Springsteen does with his voice in that first one. I gotta say that Stigers' voice reminds me of Tom Jones somewhat. Nice lyrics.
Here's one in the same vein. I always thought this song was so gently sexy and romantic.

I loved the FIFA South Africa song and clip - perhaps Palesa or someone else could tell me who the legendary player at the end, in a no. 10 jersey, is? I think we see him earlier in the clip too (as well as segregated sides, if I'm seeing right).

I don't dare trivialize or pollute French Mystique Tour's magnificent thread about Brittany, but I thought might be interesting to post an example of Breton rap. This was a huge hit in its time, although it must be pointed out that the musical refrain is not original but is a traditional Breton theme. This caused a certain amount of controversy at the time, because the rap group Manau did not acknowledge this when the song was released.

Odd, I'd assumed that was a riff on a traditional theme. That song was very popular here - there is a lot of Celtic influence in Québécois music, both from the Bretons and later waves of (Catholic) Scottish Highlanders and Irish who integrated into the French majority.
Other Scots and Irish became English speakers, but there are lots of Ryans, O'Neills, Blackburns and Camerons who don't speak a word of English.

I've always thought how much I'd like to have my favorite music played at my service - this is a very beautiful gesture casimira. I'm very sorry to hear of your mother's passing.
Your post reminded me of this favorite of mine...
It happened one night At three in the morning The devil appeared in my studio room And he said I’m your pal And I’ll make you a deal Blow away your struggle And I’ll take your soul for a toy
After rubbing my eyes I looked all around me At the half-finished drivel I’d worked on for days And I told him my dream Was to live for all time In some perfect refrain Like the man who wrote danny boy
And I said if you’re real, then I’ll ask you a question While most of us turn into ashes or dust Just you and that other guy go on forever But who writes the history And who do I trust?
He gave me a wink And he said it was funny How mortals would pour all their blood, sweat and tears Onto tape, onto paper Or into the air To be lost and forgotten Outside of his kind employ
Then I thought I could hear a great sound in the distance Of whiskey-soaked singing And laughter and cheers And they’re saying, that song could bring tears to a glass eye So pass me the papers, I’ll sign them in blood And the smell of the brimstone was turned into greasepaint And the roar of the crowd like the furies of hell And I hear the applause and I hear the bells ringing And the sound of a woman’s voice from the next room
Saying come to me now Come lay down beside me Whatever you’re doing you’re too gone to see You can’t hold onto shadows, no more than to years So be glad for the pleasures We’re young enough to enjoy
So maybe I’m drunk Or maybe a liar Or maybe we’re all living inside a dream You can say what you like When I’m gone, then you’ll see I’ll be down in the dark Down underground With shakespeare and bach And the man who wrote danny boy

Thank you Imec, a lovely song. Thank you Kimby for your warm thoughts. A woman from my mother's church sang Danny Boy,and some other of my mother's favorites. Not a dry eye to be seen. The power of music, always sends love, always, when one takes the time to hear, listen,it's there.
