.......... a bowl of orange and grapefruit sections, very lightly salted, then tossed with a mixture of bitter orange marmalade and mezcal.
I am very, very happy.

Sounds really good! Why not some crushed dried chilis (or some chopped fresh ones) though? There's an Indonesian dish of fruit salad with chili which is very good. Yours sounds better - with the mezcal, mmmm...

I love chiles, but this was more of a dessert item. Do you have more details on the Indonesian salad?

Wha?
It was a very small amount of mezcal, just enough to thin and "brighten" the marmalade.

Yeah, I can imagine you're happy...
The Indonesian vegetable salad is called gado- gado. Its the most well known salad so I'm mentioning it here.
The fruit salads are called rojak. There are three different kinds from that area, Indonesian, Malaysian and Indian.
Indonesian rojak is usually eaten as a dessert so it uses a sweetish sauce with fewer chiles.

Well, I'm happy to learn these salad terms, also, but would be even happier if I were told how to make them.

Basically they're fruits of the season. The secret's in the dressing/sauce. Quite heavy on the shrimp paste, a savoury sweet kind of taste. I have no clue how it's made as I'm not a huge fan of it. Here's something on it, from a Singaporean though... susanchuasg.googlepages.com/rojak.html

I had lunch 2 hours ago: BBQ'd marinated salmon, a risotto with peas, green salad. For dessert, a big slice of watermelon and 2 squares of black chocolate.

Since getting up at 6:00 (10 1/2 hours ago) I have eaten one square of chocolate (20g).
I also had a glass of orange juice and a coffee.

Bjd & Imec ~~ <-- my jealous face! HW & Imec ~~ thank you for those recipes. I can see how to proceed now. My little wheels are turning about the shrimp paste. Dried ground-to-a-powder shrimp are sold here mixed with salt. I'm going to experiment with turning that into shrimp paste. Kerouac ~~ is this starvation due to your being acting boss at work? I too, was having a "distressed tract" yesterday and last night, so I ate stoneground grits as hot cereal for breakfast.
For lunch, I just ate a half a seeded baguette with a can of Spanish sardines in olive oil, a little coleslaw on it, mayo, onion, a few radishes on the side, a squeeze of lime juice, a few shakes of Salsa Valentina ™, and a piece of panela cheese.
Obviously, I'm confident I've recovered.

*Bixa tries womanfully to remind everyone that this is the recipe board.*
My OP gave instructions on how to make what I ate!

I had my lunch @ an hour ago. I was so pleased with myself as usually I wait to eat until I'm hungry, anywhere between noon and two pm, then eat whatever's easy -- leftovers, eggs, that kind of thing. Today, I planned a little ahead and feasted on spaghetti with freshly made fresh tomato sauce, a tiny sirloin steak with lots of grilled onions, and steamed green beans. Yay for me!

......... papaya!
There's a fruit that must always be approached with trepidation, due to its willingness to smush on other things on the way home, its slitheriness when being peeled and cut up, and the great probability of its having no taste.
I got a bowling ball sized one yesterday. When I opened it, almost all the seeds were sprouted. The taste, though, the taste! This was one of the best I've ever had -- sweet and complex, almost spicy.
