I bought some halibut here in Tucson last week. We generally don't get fresh fish, normally frozen. The grocery store I bought from is called Frys owned by Kroeger. It is not a high end store and the halibut was on sale. It was a nice size good for two people. The regular price was $45.00 A POUND!!!!!
Are you finding fish to be more and more expensive?

It depends t63,if I go to Whole Foods or somewhere like that the prices are really high for fish that's not regional(salmon, tuna, halibut etc.the cold water Atlantic and Pacific fish). The local stuff from the Gulf is reasonably priced. I'm sure the farther inland you are the higher the price.

Fresh fish is quite expensive in Paris -- so I confess that I generally buy it frozen.

We rarely buy and cook fish here in Pátzcuaro. We prefer to eat out at a seafood restaurant. But several months ago, I did buy filetes de mero (grouper), which ran about 135 pesos a kilo, IIRC. It was very good, though, well trimmed and waste free.
It's a long story, and not for here at this time, but our favorite seafood restaurant gave Doña Cuevas a half kilo of snapper (?) fillets and a half kilo of shrimp. We may eat the snapper (could be tilapia, I don't know yet) tomorrow.

We're near an important fishing area, not far from either the Channel or the Atlantic Ocean and yes, the fish IS expensive. you might find more info about the type of fish to go for there: endoftheline.com/campaign/widget(let me know if I am a bit repetitive)

Oh no, thanks for that. It is so hard to remember which fish are sustainable, and the fishmongers sure aren't about to tell us.

if i believe the stuff i read lately, it will get more expensive... the seas are quite overfished, one day there will be hardly any left, at least of some of the popular kinds...

Here is an upsetting article about panga if you happen to eat them from time to time like I do.

interesting... wonder what panga is in german, so i can avoid them... (i must admit that i still buy cheap fish occasionally. i don't eat it often, but sometimes i just want some fish. and problem is, even with the more expensive fish, i have trouble telling which one is good, healthy, and has been fished in a not too bad way...)

Pangasius in German. Very popular, just like Victoriasee Barsch (and just as bad for local fish populations). I see it here all the time, very, very cheap, ok taste, good for cooking, farmed here as well. I prefer it dried and salted.
