Here’s a nice container of spring onions that I sowed last August to tick along through winter. Ready for picking now.

I’ve never worn a hatvest. Too difficult to get on.

Aaah! Maybe change it for a bountiful HARVEST! My your spring onions look the same size as mine and I only planted the seedlings about a month/6 weeks ago. If you were to plant more seedlings now, would they develop as fast as that seeing you are going into summer now?

Today being the 9th April 2021 has to be the longest time anyone has waited for tomatoes to produce some fruit when they were planted on 20th October 2020! 6 months. Just one medium size tomato - the label identifying it as a Black Krim Heirloom tomato. Must have been from the tomato seedpacks we bought in Barcelona 2018. Now Mick, or anyone who grows tomatoes, please tell me if I should cut several slices and lay them on a nice rich composted soil - cover them lightly and hope the seeds will grow - OR, dry out the slices first?

I would definitely dry them!
Or get somebody to send you a new packet!

Thanks Mick. So I dry them, then plant them, then wet them? Does the drying help the seed mature?

Gardeners World says pick very ripe tomatoes, halve them, scoop out the seeds and put in water in a jar for 4 to 5 days. Empty into a sieve then wash thoroughly. Put on kitchen paper to dry then store in an envelope. Sow the following spring.

Great - but my problem is it's eternal spring here.....

Yes but doesn’t the amount of daylight change?

October seems to be your best month to sow per internet.

I once grew a row of Purple Ruffles basil from a seed packet I bought on an impulse. Made some really odd looking pesto sauce, sweet with hint of root beer and of course basis smell. Paired well with pork or salmon.

October seems to be your best month to sow per internet. Yes you're right Mick - I was half joking, but apart from the daily temperatures hovering around 20C's the amount of sunlight is sufficient to keep most plants doing OK. Maybe they won't flower to produce fruit but I think they have a good chance of growing steadily. It's nice to hear your tomato plants are well on their way!

I fancy daylength is more important than temperature.

First picking of my beans with the big leaves and purple flowers. Don't know the name as I have mislaid the empty packet. The photo on it showed yellow beans and purple beans but I see the yellow ones are green.

I have grown the purple ones & it is always a fun surprise to see them change color when cooked. I've never even tried to grow the yellow ones because I (rightfully) hated canned "wax beans" as a kid.

Okay ~ here is some great news for all of you on the lookout for something wonderful. I just found out that there is such a thing as a "seed library". You get to take a certain number of seed packets (free) & are only asked to share some of your seeds later when you harvest. Be creative when looking up your area on the list. Using cntrl+F, you should have some luck, but remember that US states are by their two letter abbreviations instead of the full names. Look for that kind of thing for other countries as well. I hope everyone can find, if not something nearby, maybe someplace where a friend or relative could pick up that long-sought seed for you. Sorry, there is no sure indication of when the list was last updated. seedlibraries.weebly.com/sister-libraries.html

We have a seed exchange library here in NOLA. I haven't used it yet but have heard good things about it from fellow gardening friends.
I harvested the last of my radishes and beets this past weekend. Time to put in some eggplant (aubergines), cucumbers and zucchini.

Thank you Bixa for the info about the Seed Library. I have in the past got my seeds from Bakersfield in the US.
