Because it has been so cold, seeds have germinated but are barely growing at present.
I have 9 varieties of tomato in the greenhouse which will go out in about a month from now.

Sowed Fordhook Giant Swiss chard and Bulls Blood beetroot today. Potatoes and onions are up and my Oxheart heritage carrots are up too. Sweet corn has just germinated in the greenhouse. Everything is at least 2 weeks behind because of the cold dry spring.

Wonderful that your seedlings are coming along Mick. My good news is the Savoy cabbage seeds and Alisa Craid tomato seeds have germinated and we are looking after them like gold. Just a few to start with and will do a few more every two weeks to stagger the harvesting. In the meantime I thought I would try something new. I planted a few zucchini seeds. They seem to be doing well. I got the gardener to erect some Teepee style poles for them to climb on. Probably will add some string to assist them get up high.

You said it ! The little cabbage sprouts are looking great. planting them into the seed trays so they can spurt ahead. The tomato seeds are a bit slower. No really visible green yet but the seeds have split open.

You haven’t missed much Potatoes and onions are up but that’s about it. I planted broad beans I had germinated in the greenhouse but they have barely grown. I’ve never known it so late. Got the heating on in the house this evening!

Is Spring late for you all in England, or is this normal?
Whatagain, did she make raised beds or dig them directly into the ground?

Mick I am in awe of your carrots! They look so vibrant and healthy. Can I ask, how did you sow or germinate them so that they did not come out in thick and thin patches?

I make 2 furrows in the compost as if I were sowing in the ground then sow the seed as thinly as I can and just cover. Once the seedlings are big enough I thin them out and because the container is up on the shed roof the carrot fly can’t reach it.

Great stuff....
My peas are in a big pot with a climbing frame (we call it The Gibbet)...a plastic and metal oojamaflip I bought off t'internet.. splendid fun to construct...even with OH hovering over me saying 'IT'S UPSIDE DOWN' or 'YOU'RE DOING IT ALL WRONG'...*sigh* My carrots are in a big, deep tub (an old recycling box) upon 3 bricks...they've only just started to germinate. The potatoes are doing well and the sweetcorn getting bigger all the time....in the GH at present. Yesterday I potted on the tomatoes...Shirley, Cherokee Purple, Fruit Punch, Annie's Singapore and Ania. The cucumbers are very slow this year but it has been cold. I gave up on the lettuce and courgettes that I had sown in March and have sown more.

We may be in autumn/winter but the vegetable garden is on steroids! I can't keep up using it all so of course it goes to people I know will use it. Just look at these green peppers all vying for position in the sun: Not sure what this row could be...maybe broccoli maybe cauliflower? Aubergines peeping out from every angle. A young cabbage waiting for the chop. Gorgeous crunchy radishes for the salad. Crisp lettuce to join the salad. My lemon tree coming into fruit.

Your garden is stunning, tod2. Those radishes look like exhibitionists to me. I thought they were supposed to hide a bit more.

You're right about the radishes - I was picking them yesterday for our salad and found it so easy to see which ones were big enough. Another bed of radishes with taller leaves had long knarled fruit and not good. They too were above the ground. Maybe we should try and sow seed a bit deeper...

A kind Anyport member sent me some packets of seeds last year, one of which is just called "mixed leaves" to be used as small garnishes on other dishes. I filled my window box with them this year and they grow spectacularly well, but they got ahead of me (after all, how much can I garnish when I am just preparing meals for myself?). So now I am mostly just appreciating them visually because they have gone into bloom with delightful tiny flowers. I hope that some tiny pollinators come and discover them.

Perfect for smaller appetites or fewer than 6 children! I still have enough seeds left for another crop or two of "mixed leaves," either later this year or next spring.

Cheery, those potatoes are really going to town!
Mick, I am glad to see this picture of your plot. You kept talking about what you were starting or planting and I was confused, thinking you had hardly any space. Happy to see how wrong I was!

I'm trying to work out where I'm going to grow all the tomatoes, cucumbers, chillis and sweet peppers. Normally I'll grow one or two tomato plants, 2 cucumbers and one pepper...but this year I have received lots of seed from a chum on a gardening mb and even tho i only sowed a couple of each variety they ALL germinated...
One of my sisters is here tomorrow....hopefully she will take a few plants.

Mick is that garden on the sidewalk? If so, you must live in an awfully nice neighborhood. No stealing your lovey potatoes or beans!

Well I'm very impressed! Here in our city we have had several roundabouts planted with kale, purple cabbage, etc, etc. Who comes and harvests it is a mystery. we have grown a lawn on our verge - belonging to the city, but I get very uptight if I find passersby lolling on my lawn and leaving beer cans!
