Nice!
Are the tomatoes & broad beans you planted today baby plants or seeds?

Yes, I recall you saying you were planting your tomato seedlings/plants this weekend Mick.
Over the years I read, see pics of your different varieties of tomatoes and find myself both admiring and a tad bit jealous of the success you have with the heirloom varieties etc.
It's just too darn hot and humid here and although one could grow them here, they require constant vigilance and fussing over.

Busy, busy, busy this morning.
First new potatoes dug this morning, sweet corn area dug and planted with 9 sweet corn plants. French bean plants and cucumber planted. More or less there now. Just need a decent summer.

Put a little pond in, stock it with fish, and you'll never have to leave home for food again!

I was telling them all that what we do now is plant pumpkins between the sweet corn and beans to climb up the sweet corn.

My vegetables haven't done so well this year. I took the peas, lettuce and cucumbers because they looked awful. It's too early for the potatoes and carrots. My strawberries have been quite good tho...

Your harvest looks delicious Mick. Do you grow your taters in pots?

They are in the ground Cheery but carrots in containers.
We had them with pork medallions and the first courgettes in butter. The potatoes and carrots cooked so quickly too and were so delicious.

Broad bean crop was poor this year partly because of blackfly that I couldn’t eradicate plus the June weather was probably too warm for them. Yellow stem chard is now pickable.
Cucumbers are forming.
Tomatoes and beetroot are steaming ahead as is the sweet corn.

Winter veg coming on too fast! I will look like broccoli soon! Broccoli in tubs around the pool - so we can keep tabs on those pesky snails. Veg haul on Friday: Just a few green been plants that nearly succumbed to a million black aphid looking creatures so I had to spray. Biggest lettuce grown so far. [/url

Excellent harvest! You can become vegetarians, but for some reason I don't think that you want to.

I could never be a vegetarian by choice. I must admit - since growing a lot of vegetables we do eat more of them. That can only be healthy. On the flipside - How many vegetable recipes could one possibly enjoy? I have just gone through my vegetarian recipes and maybe when it comes to Aubergine, green beans and pumpkin/zucchini squash, there are some very interesting recipes I will be trying. Right now I am getting ready to pick the green beans that had the black bugs a week ago. I found a recipe I think will be just right for Sunday lunch.

Tod, your vegetables are picture perfect!
Are the big beautiful broccoli in the second picture from the tubs around the pool?
I can't call myself a vegetarian since I still occasionally eat meat, although very seldom. But my daily diet is so vegetable & grain based that I have to remember to include eggs and cheese to ensure that I'm getting enough protein.

Thanks Bixa! Those two broccoli heads were from the raised beds in the garden. Ones around the pool are still to develop. It seems to me a lot of plant effort goes into creating huge leaves first which I can understand as the flowerhead needs to grow without sunlight beating down on it.

Harvested first beetroots yesterday. All eaten by 8pm.
A couple of chard plants gone to seed because of the hot weather.

If I had beetroot, I am afraid it would go to the compost. I do know that Ozzies and Kiwis think it should be put on burgers.

Beetroot can be cooked in many ways but to my mind it is a salad vegetable and is best served raw. Usually grated. Pickled in jars in various shapes and forms makes a nice addition to any hot summer day salad . And remember, it is very good for you!
