I love Matt's column and I always read it. He recently did a big article in the Sunday NYT about Canal St. Martin which was very interesting. Lots of good information.

Not being a foodie, I avoid this sort of thing. My interests are more frugal -- simply finding an adequate meal at the best possible price.

Anyway, the title is terrible -- the day should be devoted to the taste buds. You can put just about anything in the stomach.

Matt Gross is the "frugal traveler" the way I'm the Queen of Hungary. In any article of his I've read about some place I actually know, it's painfully obvious that he is a) using the guidebooks and b) bankrolled by the NYTimes.
Let him go to these places and let him report. But he can stop pretending these are insider discoveries or that they're for travelers on a budget.

The NY Times writers operate in an exalted monetary reality all their own. Well, maybe it's a NY thing.

But they way they write always sounds so nice. When I write about food it sounds like a 100 word essay from high school. Not being a foodie,...Ya, and my name's Jack
