I'm getting one tomorrow, so I have to be on a clear liquid diet all day today. I know some of you on this board are older than me, so I assume some of you have had colonoscopies. How will it be really? I've heard it doesn't hurt, but how will I feel afterwards? How do I get through today? I'm feeling hungry already... Also, is there anyone here who should be getting one but doesn't? I'm doing it earlier than usual because of family history. Most of my siblings have done so too, but I have a brother who won't. It's not that he outright refuses, he just says yeah he know he should and then just doesn't. Any ideas of how I can convince him? (Out of all of us his diet is the worst, too.)

I'm sorry livaco, but I've never had one. Is it to check for anything specific?
I don't like hospitals or having any kind of medical procedures done, I know others are OKay with them though. I hope it all goes well. Our health is important, we should all be taking more notice of our bodies and getting regular checkups.

I've had one. Not painful, but not particularly comfortable. I got to watch most of it on a monitor. The worst part was afterward - during the procedure, they pump air into you - some of it stays and I found the drive home somewhat painful. I'd suggest that when they "offer you a seat" afterwards, take your time...

It's not to check for anything specific, by which I mean I don't have any symptoms or anything. It's just a routine check. Hopefully everything will be ok.
imec, I didn't know I could actually watch it. I don't know if I'd want to, but I probably would. I'm usually a pretty curious person.

I had one two years ago, simply routine, over 50 recommended. I also watched on a monitor. Felt a tiny, tiny cramping after which they sedated me more. Don't have to have another one for 10 years or more. I was glad to have had it done. The worst part was fasting the day before. When I scheduled it I didn't realize at the time that the day before was Easter Sunday and I had to forego all the wonderful outdoor feasts, crawfish boils etc. on one of my favorite holidays. You don't feel anything unpleasant afterward. You'll be fine, today is the worst part.

Oh, poor casimira! I would have hated to do this diet on a holiday! As it was I told my son and hubby to eat away from me, and I didn't see anyone else all day. But I do now realize just how often food is shown on tv...
Well, I'll get it done early tomorrow, glad to hear that the worst is done.
Any ideas on how to get my brother to do this? I guess I can just keep hassling him, but in the end you can't force an adult to do something.

I'm supposed to go for one before the end of the year. My doctor says that if you schedule one in the morning, you can be back at work the same afternoon.
However, I think I'll take the whole day off whenever I do it.

You don't feel anything unpleasant afterward. Maybe you didn't - mine hurt like hell.

I had one several years ago. I had been having some sharp pains in my gut. I didn't find the colonoscopy painful or distressing. I rather enjoyed looking at the screen. Finally the doctor found a slightly inflamed piece of gut and said I might have diverticulitis....but I've been fine since and am sure I don't suffer from it! As I was slightly sedated throughout the procedure I don't remember much but certainly I had no pain. I'd rather go through a colonoscopy than visit the dentist

You don't feel anything unpleasant afterward. Maybe you didn't - mine hurt like hell. Must be a guy thing. I remember giving a guy friend of mine a ride home after his and every slight bump that we hit in the road he whined.(In NOLA we have near sized craters in the streets and I went very slow and avoided any major potholes). Upon request ,you can get a copy of the imaging to take home. Imagine having a picture of your very own you know what to show whomever your heart desires?

My paternal grandmother (the old bitch) kept her gall stones in a jar and showed them to anybody who was interested.

You know, before the procedure when they were asking me if I had any questions I thought of asking if I could have a picture. I don't know why I decided against it 'cause now I wish I had one, (but not enough to actually call and ask for one).
Anyway, it all went just fine. The doc gave me the all clear; he didn't find anything up there (yay!). I don't hurt at all. (Maybe it is a male/female thing.) I was drugged up pretty well, because I don't remember any of the procedure and I was pretty out of it on the way home. Then I slept for an hour or so and now feel mostly ok, just maybe a little dozy.
The nurse gave me whole list of things to not do for the rest of the day -- driving, housecleaning, watching young children, vacuuming, cooking, drinking alcohol etc. There's only one of those I'm not so happy about..

You were in a big mood for watching after young children while vacuuming?

Yeah, you guessed it -- I am a HUGE fan of vacuuming, especially while watching young children! ;D

They didn't give me no drugs - I wonder if that's why it was painful after?

imec, was that a choice you made, or is it how they do things in Canada? Or do different doctors have different ideas of the best way to do the procedure? I just did what my dr. recommended, probably should have looked into it first, but it's over now, so...

I wasn't given a choice. I recall taking my Dad for his though and he was heavily sedated. Probably varies by physician, age of patient and a variety of other issues (not the least of which would be cost - mine was done in a private clinic, my Dad's was in the hospital... )

I have had one about 8 years ago. Another 2 years and I am up again. Kirk had one on Monday 8/10. Oh boy!!!!! It was his first and as most men, he wasn't happy but did it, but I thought I would never hear the end of the prep complaints. Now, he is 6' 2" and going without sustainable food, no chocolate, etc was not a good thing. In addition they had problems, started the screening and found out that he had a "long" colon so they selected another instrument and started all over again!!!!!!. The result, they didn't finish because they didn't have an instrument long enough, and said, well in 10 days, you will need to do the Barium Enema to make sure there is nothing going on in the area that we couldn't get to. Like that is going to happen, not likely and not before we go to Paris in September(will be 30 days to go in the 16th). The doc tried to get us in yesterday, but since he did remove a very small polyp, the Xray Lab didn't want to proceed. He would have had to re do the prep toward last part of this month and that was and is a no go. The only thing is that the doc wasn't too worried, so hopefully we will have it done later in the fall.

imec, I didn't realize they hadn't given you anything, not even a sedative? I sincerely apologize for calling you whiny. That's downright sadistic. Jeez. Well, next time you will know to demand it. Mine was in a private clinic as well and they were ready at the quick with that valium.

I have heard that in most cases in France, they prefer to just put people to sleep so they can fiddle around down there at their will.

I once had a gastroscopy without being sedated. Next time I would insist on having drugs. Livaco, I am glad you got the all clear ! :-)
