Very interesting. Just from those photos, I am not sure that I agree with all of the choices, but of course such things are done by experts for a variety of reasons, so I am certainly not qualified.
I just wish that receiving the world heritage site designation would be permanent protection for such places, but obviously it is not the case.
It would make more sense to strengthen the designations and provide funds to help rather than just making a contest list of pretty places. France, for example, is constantly pushing for more sites to be named in the country because obviously it helps the local tourist trade, but I find it just pathetic. France is already the most visited country in the world so does it really need more advertising? Obviously not! These designations should help the developing countries instead.

K2:
I don't hold much hope for any really nice sites to be designated in the US with the current drill baby drill mentality here. They are now trying to develop mining very near the Grand Canyon. Most of the U. S. World Heritage Sites are ministered by the National Parks Systems and the U. S. Congress has consistentlyl reduced the yearly fiscal budget for the National Park System. So with less money many of our national monuments are literally falling apart. I have no clue why Americans are so hell bent to tear down old, beautiful buidlings, homes, etc down to replace them literally with parking lots.

I have discovered recently (I was in Japan last month) that the Atomic bomb dome in Hiroshima is listed as a World Heritage Site. It was added to the list in 1996. I was amazed to read the United States (and China) had protested of that decision. I visited the nearby Peace Memorial Museum. It's definitely the most moving place I have ever been to.

Protested? What's wrong with those people?

They're scared the Japanese are sort of moving towards becoming victims instead of perpetrators... Is my guess.

So I guess that the Kaiser Wilhelm church in Berlin will never be a world heritage site either.

I never was a big fan of Berlin, don't like the way the people talk there, makes my toenails curl right up.
Is the rest of Dresden a WHS? The Semper Opera or the Zwinger or the cathedral? They were stupid enough to become the second WHS that's been struck off the list.
