El Embalse de Rules - situated to the south of the Alpujarras (south of Granada) and fills from several rivers caused by the run off from the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada mountains. Supplies 250,000 people on the south coast stretching east and west from Motril plus irrigation for large swathes of farmland. Photos taken looking north(ish) back to the Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada in the far distance. First photo is looking towards Lanjaron, second is more north west towards Orgiva and furthest away in that direction would be Trevelez (height 1486m), famous for its air cured hams, said to be the best in Spain (debatable). Photos taken at GPS point 36.872465, -3.472870 (stick that in Google Maps to see where I stopped for a pee around 4pm today). Everywhere very brown and dry, high fire risk, but reservoir reasonably full for this time of year -

I had a flight from Lisbon to Florence a couple of summers back and what you see in these photos is exactly what I expected to see: brown hills dotted with a few oak trees. I did see some of that, but what I saw a lot more was green forest below us. Maybe it was just a bizarre peculiarity of the flight path, but it still shocked me.

If it was a direct flight you'd be travelling way north of me. Across Madrid and the northern part of Spain. It can often be a lot greener up there.

Beautiful picture, Mick. It looks like a cold, crisp morning.
