The owl looks like a huge version of a roach or a moth, just looking at its back in the first photo.

We are invaded almost daily now with troops of vervet monkeys. They always have a leader who seems to go ahead and scout out the food opportunities for himself before the rest of the bunch catch up. Here he is climbing on top of the bird feeder and gobbling up all the bananas I had just put out for my Mousebirds, Bulbuls, and even the Weaver birds love the fruit. Mmmmmm....whats for breakfast this morning? Oh goodie! It's bananas! Don't even think of approaching me while I'm stuffing my face..... yes, these fangs are for real!

To us they look exotic -- to you they are just pests taking the birdfood away, Tod!

Super pictures, Tod.
How problematic are the monkeys for you?

I'm afraid these marauding troops are perilously close to being caught and euthanized. Raiding peoples gardens and finding fruit put out for the birds is a big plus. If there is nothing to be had there, they destroy ones garden. I have lost 12 cabbages due to the monkeys biting off the tops and leaving the rest. So no matter how many plants you may try and bring to a decent vegetable, they have taken a chunk out of each so you can loose all in one foul swoop. They biggest problem is they invade your house. Any window or door left open is an invitation to come in and party! I have accosted a large male (just like the photo) strolling in through my front door and he immediately showed me his fangs and kept coming until he was able to jump up on the table and grab a bunch of bananas. He scampered out as soon as he had his prize!
It's a sad situation as this land used to be open grass and trees until in the early 1900's people cut up the farmland and sold off plots for housing. The monkeys now roam - and increase - year by year. I have been living here for 33 years and the monkey problem has only happened over the last 5-or so years.

Great photos of the monkeys, tod!
It was the same situation in Bangalore. So many monkeys everywhere and they would try and get inside if they could, so a lot of people put metal guards in front of their windows to stop this from happening.
Of course for someone like me, who was not used to seeing monkeys walking around it was fun to see.

Thank you Deyana. Monkeys are interesting and cute in a wildlife park like Kruger, but here in suburbia they are real pests. It seems there is no-one able or nowhere suitable for them to be re-located. I'm afraid some are being maimed or injured because people are shooting them with a pellet gun. That is shameful. I do let off a few Black Spider crackers when the troop is running riot all over my garden, roof and trying to get in the windows. The crackers make a huge bang and they scamper some distance away, but not far!!

It's awful that anyone would harm these monkeys, Tod. The loud crackers sounds like a good way to scare them away, for a while anyway. I guess eventually they will have to be moved elsewhere, but like you say, how and by whom?
