Very interesting shot. Those trees don't look like they belong there.

Those pine trees were imported fully grown from the forest of Bord-Louviers in Normandy. They were saved in extremis by the bibliothèque François Mitterrand because they were about to be cut down to make way for a quarry.

That explains the growth patterns that I don't believe you would achieve if they had grown in that space from saplings.

Cheery - I love that old pollarded oak tree with the seating encircling it. I think I'm right about it being an oak!?
Bixa - your photo of the (I think) Flamboyant trees with their white "diapers" look wonderful!
Kerouac -That row of trees on the horizon is telling me that they should be in leaf at any moment!
And wow Lizzy - what a sight for sore eyes!! Aren't those pink blossoms just fabulous!

Is that a flowering cherry tree, lizzy? Here the fruit-giving cherry trees have white blossoms.
Which makes me wonder whether the cherry trees the Japanese track on TV and by region are pink or white -- do they produce cherries?

Thanks, all. This is a very familiar sight around here at this time of year. Vancouver even has a cherry blossom festival similar to Japan's (seeing the weather is comparable). They're ornamental cherry, bjd, any fruit they produce is miniscule and only good for birds and insects. There are successive waves of cherries throughout the spring. First are the white ornamentals then these pinks ones and finally the big pompom cherry blossoms. They're probably the most popular civic boulevard planting there is. You go to some neighbourhoods and there are drifts of pink at the curbs and up onto the sidewalks just like snow.
