I am one of those people who almost always eats the garnishes that you are theoretically not supposed to consume -- the sprig of parsley, the lemon slice, the cherry tomato or the lettuce leaf hiding under the real food item. It goes with out saying that I gobble the carrots and tomatoes turned into carefully sculpted flowers in Indian and Chinese cooking. I think I started this as a way of making sure that they would not reuse it for the next customer.
I figure if it's on the plate, I am entitled to eat it, and I don't mind it one bit if I am in a group and my plate is the only one that is empty of its decor after the meal.
What about you?

What about you? What makes you think it hasn't been reused multiple times already? I'll eat them too if they look palatable. Hate to seen food needlessly discarded.

What makes you think it hasn't been reused multiple times already? I know this was meant at least partly in jest, but it's one of the reasons I voted "It depends". Also won't eat it if it just doesn't look fresh or clean. Also if it's just dumb and doesn't complement the dish. Having said all this - I often find myself as the only one that did eat it when dining with others.

And that's why I put "usually" in the first statement.

I like eating chunks of lemon that are cooked in a dish. I have never seen the point of slices of lemon put on something that actually needs lemon juice (such as fried fish). Press the slice with your fork and nothing comes out. Eat it whole and it is too sharp and swamps the flavour of whatever it is with.
Whatever I garnish a dish with is meant to make it look pretty but also to be eaten. People look taken aback when I encourage them to eat the flowers of nasturtiums, feijoas, day lilies, violets. But they are good.

Those little red radishes that are sometimes use most definitely get eaten. I even find the time to sprinkle some salt on them!
