Certainly the first time I've seen it -- wow! Any idea who the woman is and what language that is?

It's from the TV show "Ukraine's Got Talent". Her name is Kseniya Simonova.

"Old hat" to me, because I have even received it in e-mail, but it is always lovely to see.
Strangely enough, France still has sort-of variety shows on television. Actually, the most famous one is composed of cabaret acts from around the world ("Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde"), and there are a lot of amazing acts. That's where I saw this the first time. Very often, the most impressive ones come from the former Soviet countries, where there must still be a very strong cabaret culture. Also, quite a few come from the United States, where I suppose there is a need for them in places like Las Vegas.
What always gets me with this sort of profession is that people are able to make a living for many many years because they know how to do something exceptional for 5 minutes. I should have been so lucky!

That's funny ~~ what you wrote about cabaret reminded me of something my grandfather told me. He grew up in a town in Mississippi right on the bend of the river. When he was young, it was a lumber town and steamboats stopped there. He would tell me about the showboats and the entertainment they brought. One he told about many times was a man who came on stage with only a large easel that a big pad of paper set up on it. Papa said the man would repeatedly slash at the paper with a brush, and when he was done, there would be an elaborate calligraphy peacock or some such thing on the paper. Odd to think of nowadays, but penmanship and calligraphy exercises must have been a big deal in his youth. He prided himself on his penmanship and could do some of those curly, swirly birds and designs.

Ah yes ~~ the old "the more things change, the more they remain the same" routine. ;D
That was fun!
