Kerouac - I know it will be superb. You will make sure of that but it is so dreadfully expensive here and Mr. Tod is not a fan of "Salmon-en-croute" I go very occasionally for the trout.
Tonights faire was Ribbetjies. Whatagain will know exactly what I'm referring to. The dish is small lamb ribs roasted in herbs. Totally and absolutely divine. I serve them up with a simple lettuce salad and a starch of some kind. Tonight was samp & beans from the ftreezer.

I bought four large salmon fillets at Picard when they were having a 30% off special a few months ago. The best things is that they are individually vaccuum packed.

I got early this morning to put a pork shoulder roast in the slow cooker. I layed it on top of carrots and put in a large slice of onion. Lots of pepper and seasoned salt on the top of the roast. Serving it with steamed broccoli and a roasted sweet potato.

As ever ---it all sounds so good guys . Mich - slow cooked pork, mouth watering , it is something I love but now cooking for me alone a lot of the time its mostly a no go. I am not sure what I am having tonight but I do know what I am having tomorrow. One of our local Indie restaurants has a pop up Ramen menu for take out and is running it tomorrow. This is a link to last weeks menu -- but it is the same this week. www.luckycatnoodle.com/hereford-pop-upSo I ordered for Em and I a couple of nights ago. Maybe a little expensive ? I wont know until I have eaten it. But to be honest I just feel that every now and then I need to support local businesses that may be struggling. They encourage customers to post photos and so if I do get around to taking some photos I will post them here.

We had this discussion yesterday with friends who were looking for suggestions for this week. Last week they ordered from the snack shop at our ski hill. Our ski hill is closed due to the lockdown so no one really knew that the snack shop was still open. Our friends heard through social media that the snack shop/restaurant is contracted out and the lady who took the contract this year took a big risk attempting it and she needed help. Because of social media identifying her situation, she now has many orders coming in. She makes burgers, poutine and other grill like items. I opened the ramen link (I love reading restaurant menus!!) What items did you order?

Tonkotsu Pork for me and Chicken Kimchi for Em and we went the whole hog so sharing sides of cabbage and crackers and a dessert !!!... Misu Caramel Custard Sounds delicious and must have been an enjoyable dinner date with Em. I find it a chore cooking for myself when my husband is on shift so I try to make things that cause leftovers, such as today! He works tomorrow, I will have a roast pork sandwich and a salad tomorrow night. He works again this coming Sunday so on Saturday I am making a lasagna, I can heat up the leftover the next night. We have no delivery services that come out this far and my husband takes our only vehicle so no pick ups either, therefore, I have to think in advance a lot.

I had hot dogs (knackis) with Dijon mustard, chopped pickles, green onions and cherry tomatoes on a nice warm baguette purchased just before the curfew.

Our guest who has been staying in one of our Airbnb units on and off since last year offered to make us dinner tonight - not just any old dinner but a home cooked Thai dish as his wife is Thai. They have come back to run the kitchen at the Covid Field Hospital once again. Last year it closed around September due to the fact there were very few patients. Now they are back as the Government expected a second wave due to the new virus strain. It was delicious and had little chunks of fresh pineapple which I love. The main meat was chicken.

Lugg even the crackers looks delicious.

Lugg even the crackers looks delicious. I dont think Lugg will mind me telling you that those "crackers"are Poppadums. In the old days when they first hit our supermarket shelves the instruction was to fry them in a little oil but these days you can simply fling them into the microwave one or two at a time. They puff up beautifully with no greasy feel. I often see pineapple in Chinese stir-fry dishes but have never had it in a Thai dish. But then I think she made us something more Chinese than Thai - being the accomplished chef that she is. Not sure of the spices she use. Lugg, that meal looks divine. Am I right in thinking the little bowl of the right next to the poppadums was some kind of brinjal/aubergine dish?

plan was to leave early and have dinner at my mom's. as leaving early becomes less and less likely, i suppose we might just buy some pizza on the way ... only problem is, we'll have to eat it before entering the train station (so in the cold), as it'd be difficult to eat while wearing masks ...

I am gravitating towards soup tonight. Don't feel like preparing a real meal and I have several varieties of ready-made soup on hand. And looking at the cold outside with just a bit of sleet also tells me "hot soup."

It was a spicy cucumber relish and very nice too. The crackers were akin to poppadum's but a cross between them and Chinese / Thai rice crackers and tasted of seaweed

I had wondered if your chicken dish had a sweet & sour taste.

I see Lugg has put me straight on those crackers - I would never have made out what they were. My "shrimp crackers" that definitely taste fishy are those pink, yellow and green little things that most Chinese/Asian places put on the table for you to nibble on. The last lot I bought were not nice but poppadums are always yummy!

I have worked in the kitchen all morning preparing two dishes for dinner butin double quantity so half will go to my son and his partner. When I watched the recipe on YouTube is looked so simple. Well it could be if someone else had done all the prep of the vegetables!
First I made a Greek rice and cabbage Pilaf dish with the addition of sausage meat. Recipe in The Galley. At the same time I made Eggplant rolls with spinach. Recipe in The Galley.

I dont think Lugg will mind me telling you that those "crackers"are Poppadums. Just on a technicality, poppadums are not called that in India that I've seen - or at least only on five star hotel tourist menus. You may find them referred to as papadam but usually the shorter form of papad. You'd expect that as in the UK they are in every curry restaurant, in fact they aren't in India (unless in a tourist area). Nor will you always find naan bread because the proper ones are baked in an oven or tandoor - which nearly all of the day to day eating places don't have - thus the type of bread that can be fried or done dry on a tawa/tava (flat or concave disc-shaped frying pan or griddle) are what you'll see.

Yes I'm sure you will find a desert of Poppadums in India and other places Mark, but they started it! The food suppliers have devised a cardboard box, gayly printed it with several choices of Poppadums- with Jeera, with (close your eyes) Black pepper, chili, and so on. I like the plain ones as there is an in order amount of saltiness in some of them. I'm thinking purely for preservation purposes?. When I saw how they are made in India I almost decided I would never eat another one! One thing I do know is that I absolutely love a crispy snap crackle and crunch to my Durban curry in the form of a poppadum! www.abillion.com/reviews/5f36935dd1969200a926f53b

In French Indian/Pakistani restaurants, the owners would be run out of the country if they did not set down a plate of poppadums the moment you arrive or have naan and cheese naan on the menu. Speaking of which I need to go and buy a package of pepper poppadums at one of the Indian supermarkets in the near future.

I cooked yesterday. My standards are not really skyhigh but with my eye as it is, it dropped to very basic. I took the alu packaging containing the pasta i had bought at the butcher's and put it in the oven. But at least my wife who came back at 8, as quite usual, didn't have to do it. I had masterminded guessing her time of arrival, the pastas beeped upon her entering the kitchen.
