Fabulous, but what are you doing with a winter sky in the middle of summer?

There's probably a better category for this than Color!, but the kite-skiers' kites are about the only color in our winter landscape.

Beautiful contrasts Kimby! When my son was ill he had an obsessive need to keep his hands busy, he coped with this by making origami cranes which he strung together. Over the months he made over 25,000 of them...until they took over his bedroom! It was becoming a fire hazard. Anyway, his psychological problems all came to a head in January 2010 and the resultant crisis meant that he was taken 'into the system' and received the treatment he so desperately needed. The cranes were put in the loft as soon as he started to receive treatment....until this morning. Now he feels that this part of his life is behind him, he went into the loft with his Dad and brought out all the cranes, kept about 1000 of the most beautiful ones (for sentimental reasons) and has spent many happy hours this afternoon burning the rest! He says that it's quite cathartic, exorcising that part of his life....I'm sad that these beautiful objects have gone...but I'm also pleased that he's put the demons behind him. No regrets...my OH filmed the process and we all took pics of the cranes...thought that you might like to see some of them. the ritual burning...and I get the ash for the compost bin too!

Beautiful slices of color in that b&w landscape, Kimby. In my mom's house, there are some pictures done by native Americans in Alaska in the early 50s. Several of them are of the hunt, and composed of black and white broken only by a splash of red from the mouth of the killed game. They're very striking and your photo reminds me of them.

Cheery, those are exceptional photos, as is the poignant but heartening story behind them. They're also mind-boggling because of the sheer numbers. Thanks so much for showing this.

Cheery, I am so glad this day came for your son. The colorful beautiful image they portrays, yet he was in distress while creating them. It seems his true character was battling the illness and his character was very strong and determined. What a wonderful day for you to spend with your son. Cheers! Mich

Thankyou for your kindness I snuck in and took the one in pic 2 (multiple strings of coloured cranes, about 500)....it's so pretty I can't see something that lovely destroyed. My son is OK with it, he only managed to burn 5,000 yesterday...so there'll be more done this evening.

If it is good for him, who cares? He did it, so he can burn it at will. But has he considered any possibility of donating some of this stuff to a place that could use it? (A school, a store, a cultural centre, a nursing home...?)

Oh, that's a lovely idea, Kerouac.
I have one little crane like that, made from white scrap paper. It's dirty and battered, since it's at least 30 years old, but my dad made it, so I keep it.

We've kept about 1500 of them, he was considering donating them...exhibiting them at a local gallery etc etc...but they represent such a dark period in his life that he wanted them gone. He even used to make them on the bus! We're taking the rest of his origami paper with us when he comes to help run the cake stall on Red Nose Day at work....then he can make some to sell for charity...a few pennies each maybe.

Shortly after the end of World War II, the folded origami cranes also came to symbolize a hope for peace through Sadako Sasaki and her unforgettable story of perseverance. Diagnosed with leukemia after being exposed to radiation after the bombing of Hiroshima, Sadako became determined to fold 1,000 cranes in hopes of recovering good health, happiness, and a world of eternal peace. Although she completed 644 before she died, her classmates folded the remaining 356 to honor her. A statue was raised in the Hiroshima Peace Park to commemorate her strong spirit.
Today this practice of folding 1,000 cranes represents a form of healing and hope during challenging times. After the events of September 11, as a gesture of support and healing, thousands of cranes were folded and linked together in chains and sent to fire and police stations, museums, and churches throughout New York City
Traditionally, flocks of 1,000 cranes are offered at shrines or temples with prayer, based on the belief that the effort to fold such a large number will surely be rewarded. Chains are often given to someone suffering from illness, as a prayer for their recovery, as a wish for happiness, and as an expression of sympathy and peace.
I just had a look for this info about origami cranes. I learned about them a couple of years ago when a friend was diagnosed with cancer. A group of us started folding these cranes for her. Unfortunately, I was rather hopeless at it.
I'm happy that your son's outcome was so positive, Cheery.

My eyes popped out when I saw those strawberries. It's not just the crisp detail and color, but the deceptively easy look of your composition. I love those kinds of photos, because they make us really look.

I almost posted it in 'details' because of the one strawberry showing its leaves or due to the fabulous pattern of little seeds with subtle differences on each berry.
