Interesting to read such things, but also very depressing.
However, I grew up in the same sort of situation, so it is never surprising to me. When you tell people in places like Europe of the situation, they do not want to believe you, because to most Europeans, the United States consists of about 5 states -- New York, California, Florida and some vague conglomerations of urban areas, but always modern and ahead of the rest of the world.

So the new Samsung Galaxy Tab isn't as fast as DSL, and it's maddening to wait for photo-intensive threads to load, especially when you have to wait for all the "old" images to load before you can see the newest ones.
Moderators, is there any way to set the board so that the newest images on the page load first? Then those of us with slower connections could see the new stuff in threads that we are following and close it before all the old stuff is loaded (eating up our "data allowance")?

Kimby, as far as I know & have observed, some of how the pictures load has to do with the hosting site. If you'll look down at the bottom of your screen when a page is loading, you can see "waiting on photobucket", or similar about other host sites. It also has to do with how a particular browser performs on your computer & other variables.
One thing we can all do to help with page loading is to not "quote" photographs. It adds yet another thing for the page to load and is completely unnecessary. (actually, removing anything extraneous from what's being quoted makes for smoother reading)
The other thing you can to to alleviate frustration is this: Open the page with all the slow-loading images and then let it be -- don't scroll, don't do anything. Now open anything else that might interest you in another tab or window and go about your business. (or go find something to do, if your connection is so bad that you can't have two tabs going at once) After an appropriate amount of time, return to the picture-rich page. It will be all loaded & you will not have hyperventilated.

Thanks bixa, but my data allowance (2GB per month) gets used up loading the images I've already seen while I wait to see the ones I haven't.
But at least I eventually can see the photos, which is an improvement over the OMG dialup!

Oh, I'm so glad I looked at this thread again, as re-reading gave me an obvious idea. I feel so dumb I didn't think of this before. Kimby, just use the compass on the main page to see posts since your last visit! If something new was posted in a photo thread, you'll only see the new item & not the whole page of pics. The downside is that you'd still have to open the thread in order to post in it. That & other hints for streamlining the use of the forum can be found here: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=welcome&thread=4978&page=1#111396

You know, bixa, that feature has never worked for me. Not once. When I lay the cursor over it, it says "javascript void" at the bottom of the window.
Does it have something to do with the very plain skin that I use?

Really? It works for me in Firefox, IE, and Chrome. I just changed my skin to Very Plain & the compass still works. Check this out: www.technoxx.com/javascript-void-0.htmlThe first item might be your problem. If not, I believe you're an IE user, right? Look at the Script Disabled in Browsers section of the link and try the fix in its 1st paragraph.

Thanks, bixa. There was a huge list of similar sounding items to look at and decide which if any to enable, kinda scary (but there is a reset to default settings in case I F'd if up). I suppose changes will require restarting the computer to take effect.

kimby - what i did in india was, i disabled seeing pictures, and then only rightclicked on the ones i wanted to see and allowed seeing those... they open in a separate window then i think - but then i only get to see those that i want to see, the rest won't load...

so bixa, I tried both those things and neither worked. I'm on a public computer now at the library and tried clicking on the compass thingy and it looked like it was going to do something but nothing came up. I will try rikita's method when I return to India-on-the-lake. If I can figure out how.

Sounds like the problem is "Montana". *I might get killed for this* I clicked on the compass for the very first time yesterday, and it worked just fine.

Wow -- the internet service must be really awful if even the library computers can't handle that little bit of load. My service is truly deficient, but I just clicked on the compass & it literally opened in less than one second. It's open right now in another tab, & all the videos & photos are loaded. That took less than a half minute.

I wonder if the library's computers are set to block popups. They seem fast otherwise.

Popup blockers are a curse and a blessing.... simultaneously and annoyingly.

So the downside of having this tablet for internet connection at the lake is that Mr. Kimby now wants to discontinue our DSL service at home, though the tablet connection is much slower. E.g. I was going to send an email with 4 photos attached and it was going to take over 20 minutes at the lake, took less than 3 at home. If we do ditch the DSL I predict I will be visiting the photo threads much less frequently, and uploading photos even less often.
