I have had an email from Spindrift, who asks me to say hello to everyone. She says that Phuket is as awful as she thought it was going to be (I know, why then did she go?).
The bad news is that her friend is is anorexic. So she says. No meat, no fish and no Thai food.
It was a short email because she said a pink motorbike had just come for her.
Our thoughts are with her. Right, gang?

Oh, what a shame, because Phuket can be quite nice if you know the places to avoid. Poor Spindrift does seem to have a collection of, er, inappropriate friends, at least if you consider friends to be people with whom you can relax and have fun.

I hate to say this but on a certain level the content is a relief after the thread title. I was really imagining the people of Phuket starving because of a downturn in tourism or some other reason.
That said, it is very unfortunate for Spindrift. Imagine being there and not eating Thai food!

Why does she have to eat, or not eat, the same food as her friend? Can't Spindrift enjoy some food even if her friend is anorexic?

As a general rule, if you are invited to stay with a friend then you expect to eat together. But I'll leave Spindift to speak for herself.
Anyway I have just had a second email (though extremely brief as anorexia extends to the internet) saying that things are not too bad. The sun is cheering her up.

Ah, I hadn't understood that she was staying with the anorexic friend. I thought they were just on holiday together and had the possibility of eating out somewhere. Indeed, if there is no food in the house, then that's a problem.

poor Spindrift! I hope she can find a way out. And maybe also a way to help her friend.

Tell her to rent a scooter and get out to more remote beaches. Phuket City is actually not so bad, old tin mining town with rows of Sino- colonial shophouses. Western food should be good in Patong, that's where most foreigners stay. Good prices, good selections
