Does anybody really take an interest in that event outside of North America? I personally find it remarkable that the United States can consider it to be the most important sporting event of the year while the entire rest of the world blissfully ignores it.
The only reason that I even know that it was yesterday is because it was mentioned in passing on the morning news here, as well as the fact that certain traditional advertisers were missing from the commercials due to the economic crisis.
The fact that the commercials are considered to be an event as well is probably worthy of a separate post elsewhere...

Is the US the only place where what's called "American football" is really big?
I believe the detail about the commercials is considered indicative of the economic climate because that is supposed to be the most expensive tv advertising one can buy, that of Superbowl weekend.

I'm not ignoring Canada -- I just don't pay any attention to football. Is football a big deal in Canada?
That's the thanks I get for trying to keep a dumb sports thread going.

I read a grim stat yesterday in NY Times, "more people watched Superbowl 2004 than voted in 2004 Election". Truly embarassing. Me, I had the streetcar ALL to myself and went to premiere of film about a local musician, audience of about 30,had streetcar to myself on return home. Could see the TV glare coming out of almost every home. I rather enjoyed it.

I have been avoiding this thread all day because I thought you were posting scores etc. Only knew that it was this weekend because a friend in the States status update reflected it.

We are watching Super Bowl LVII.
Though we aren’t emotionally attached to - or opposed to - either team, we can’t miss the last (American) football game of the season.
And the commercials and half-time show - Rihanna this year / usually make it worth the 3+ hours.
I heard today that 29 of the 30 largest TV audiences in American history were Super Bowls. The lone non-football TV event was, wait for it, the M*A*S*H* finale.

It was mentioned on the French news last night, more to talk about the hugely expensive advertising ($7 million for 30 seconds) and the half-time show as well as the junk food. Can't remember the mind-boggling number of chicken wings consumed that day.

I'm so glad that the damn thing is over and done with but the first thing the news reported this morning was a rehashing of it ad nauseum. Far too much hype leading up to it and then the need to further report about it is a source of great embarrassment about what and where the US priorities lie on the world stage.
