There is a strike that is currently blockading the major breweries of Belgium, and the stores have run out of the main brands, Stella Artois, Jupiler and Leffe. The Netherlands are also beginning to run short.
Since Belgians drink 96 liters of beer a year, this is big news and sould spark a national revolt.

Oh, I thought they're running out of potatoes.

Kerouac sounds gleeful at the prospect of beer-deprived Belgians taking it to the streets! ;D
Is that true about potatoes, HW, or are you being facetious?

I had a conversation about that with some Dutch colleagues and yes, they were worried for their supply of Jupiler, which is apparently very popular in the south of the Netherlands.

Are brands from other countries being allowed into Belgium? Also, who are the strikers?

Well, good for them for sticking up for the workers, especially with an upstart outsider company coming in and slashing jobs. Cutting 10% of jobs in that company across Europe is hugely destructive.

I remember people in the American Midwest actually fearing for the quality of Bud due to the Stella Artois buyout of Anheiser-Busch :rolling on the ground laughing smilie:

Yep, I was kidding. Belgian beer is good though I've never felt the need to go out of my way to try it. We've got pretty much the same stuff in Germany. But there's something strange about the artificialness of Belgium... I cannot take that country seriously. Apologies to all the Belgians on the board, hopefully you'll start posting now.

I'm not actually a fan of those heavy and even flavored trappist brews made from ambient yeast spores that I think of as being essentially Belgian. Allegedly knowledgeable people rave about them and I see them on the store shelves priced like decent wines so there must be something to them. And heck, Stella tastes pretty much like Dutch beer to me- I guess it's probably Flemish.
