I have no idea why this struck me as funny yesterday. I've seen the sign hundreds of time. But it got me to thinking - samovars? pinatas? coconuts?

I wonder if it'd be OK if I like had dinner the night before in Canada and needed to go?

Okay, what exactly is this sign directing one to do? Writing on far right says "health is in your hands"

To me it looks like they are asking women to go for a breast check-up and the gloved hand looks like it is holding a swab that is used when undergoing a cervical smear. Also the word Papanicolaou must relate to the Pap Smear. The circles of 'pommergranite seeds' resemble the tissue inside a breast.

I'd certainly want to try that. Zambia is being inundated with speed cameras. Hand held ones have been around some time, but now the government has clicked on to the idea that they can make a lot of money out of fixed ones. The favourite road is out to the airport where there are five or six of them. When they were first installed someone in authority realised they weren't legal because there was no warning sign. There was no speed limit sign either for that matter, but that is quite normal here. Rumour was they would repay the fines of anyone already caught due to this, but they have now said that even though the lack of signs was a problem, they aren't repaying any money. No surprise really. Zambian Road Traffic Law is extremely similar, if not nearly identical, to GB traffic law. This is a problem for me. I am constantly being stopped by the police for doing things they say is illegal. Absolutely ridiculous things like a few days a go I was stopped for going straight on at a roundabout. Bear in mind there are never road marking or signs for this or many of the offences I seem to have committed. Another example is going straight on at a set of traffic lights where there also were no markings or signs. I know there are specifications in GB law as regards the positioning, size, colour etc etc of road signs. There are cases in the UK of convictions being overturned because it was found the road sign prohibiting or restricting something did not comply with those specifications. Zambian law is the same. I have a copy of their Road Traffic Act and the last numerous pages are taken up with these specific specifications. When I was stopped for going straight on at a set of traffic lights I argued that there were no signs or road markings informing me of this prohibition and restriction. The police said there were. In fact there used to be many years ago but only road markings and by now they have disappeared. I argued with the ranking traffic officer at the police station at the side of the junction about this. His reply was it doesn't matter if there are signs or not, it is still prohibited. I showed him a reply I had had from the government body in charge of the police where they had confirmed you cannot be prosecuted for failing to obey a sign when a sign doesn't exist. The ranking officer shouted at me it doesn't matter and virtually threw me out of his office. I may have related this story before. I noticed last week though there are new signs and road markings. Maybe someone listened. So to get to the meat of the matter - according to their own Road Traffic Act the following sign has a number of defects such that it doesn't comply with the regulations. Two being that the rear of the sign(s) must be black and the pole must be painted black and white. There are other problems but mainly to do with size of lettering and stuff like that. Plus the colours, though looking right, are not those specified in the regs. If the sign is deemed to not comply, then all fines taken from the camera are forfeit as in effect, there is no warning, but mainly there is no speed limit sign informing motorists of the restriction and change of limit (in this case previous to the sign it is 80km/h limit). People here hate the cameras with a passion, not because the speed limit is being enforced, they have no problem with that, but that the money will invariably be squandered or find its way into the pockets of those who shouldn't have it. The fine, by the way, is not a problem for me, it is 300 Kwacha. I know this as I've already been caught and paid it. That is one reason I decided to have a quick look at the signage. Equivalent to Euro 22.50 or $25. But when you are a local who earns probably $5 a day, it's quite a lot of money. That must be why all the cars now travel at 40km/h in the 60 limit and about 50km/h in the 80 limit. The question is, can I be bothered to contact the head boss man of the police, or his underling, and tell them about the signs not conforming to the regulations? If I do, will they be bothered? And can I have my speeding fine back then? Hmmm.

I get a speed camera fine in France about once every two years. (Then again, if I actually owned a car, I would probably get more.) As for the Peruvian sushi, after mentioning it elsewhere, it was quickly pointed out to me that this is a major chain, considered excellent and a bit on the expensive side compared to non-Peruvian sushi. I would like to try it, too. cotesushi.com/
