The snake dens of Narcisse are the winter home to tens of thousand of Red Sided Garter Snakes. The dens are about an hour's drive from Winnipeg and have the largest concentration of this species in the world. Take a virtual tour... www.naturenorth.com/spring/creature/garter/Narcisse_Snake_Dens.html(click on the map about a 1/3 of the way down the page)

That is just the niftiest thing ever! Are the summer feeding grounds nearby?
I love that their dens are in Narcissssssssse.
How wonderful that they are protected there.

Yeah, there are lots of marshes and ponds close by so they just slither off for the summer. The young don't return to the dens until their second winter - they seek out ant hills or other areas where they can get down beneath the frozen ground after their first summer.

I've seen this before and nobody ever believed me when I told the story. But I saw them (fresh-water snakes) in the south of Iran.

I see a good scenario for a movie here that takes place in a gardening supply store. An innocent customer asks to see where the garden hoses are kept, and suddenly.....

I really enjoyed this. There are so many misconceptions and overall ignorance about snakes. I have great respect for these glorious creatures.

I remember crawfishing in a bayou in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. The cottonmouths would come fairly close to us and open their white mouths in a threat display, but never came close enough to strike. Just looked them up on the internet, and supposedly they're very aggressive. That wasn't my experience.
