Hurricane Katrina made enormous headlines around the world and was a major news item for months. Then it faded from the minds of most people not in the area. However, the locals are still living in the aftermath, and rather than being rebuilt, a lot of the smaller towns are still rotting way.

This is not to say that everywhere looks like this. Some of the old sections of New Orleans have been lovingly restored, and some new towns are slowly rising from the ruins. But the deep south has long been considered to be an American backwater, and decay has always been a normal part of the landscape.
