One evening in Paris, a friend who lives there, took me for a fascinating walk from Gare du Nord, along the Canal Saint Martin to La Villette and beyond. We passed a beautiful series of buildings that caught my eye and I was told it was Le Couvent des Recollets. Situated in the 10th arrondissment and close to the canal, for me it would be a very desirable place to stay. It was founded in 1604 and the first stone of their convent and larger church was laid by Marie de Medici in 1614. Today, only fine examples of the 18th century architecture remain. The convent has gone through many different uses with time, as a hospice in the early 1800's, then a military hospital during WW1 and 2, and also during the Algerian war. The obsolete equipment led to its closure in 1968 and it became an artist's squat from 1990-1992. Its restoration in 2003 led to the creation of the Artists' residence of Recollets. This is a remarkable opportunity if you are an artist and can qualify. This is what is offered: ... LENGTH OF STAY 3 consecutive months. The residences will take place from January to December 2011.
THE NATURE OF THE SUPPORT Culturesfrance will allocate a 1500 € fixed monthly allowance. This is intended to cover living expenses such as food, local transport, etc. The City of Paris will cover the rental of accommodation at the Couvent des Récollets for the duration of the residence.culture360.org/opportunity/artist-residency-paris-couvent-des-recollets/The official site is, www.international-recollets-paris.org/inscription/accueil.php?lng=enAll of the places are now booked for 2010, and they are accepting applications for 2011 until June 20,2010. to be continued.

Guess I have to get going on my artwork. I do work connected to the arts, but not enough direct "artwork" these days to qualify, I fear.
That is extraordinary, especially the bursary. With lodging, I could easily live in Paris on that, as what is pricy in Paris is the lodging. Great location.

Curious as to what the accomodation would be like, I searched and found few photos, but did find this blog by Dennis Cooper, with some excellent photos of his studio and some of his thoughts on staying there. denniscooper-theweaklings.blogspot.com/2009/02/slideshow-where-i-generally-hang-my-hat.htmlNone of these are my photos are mine (still had not figured out how to use my new camera at the time), but they will give you a sense of the residence. courtyard at night jazz concert one night

Yeah, he calls it his "room" but it has a self-contained bath/toilet (probably tiny WC and shower) and kitchen. Rooms can be much grimmer than that, and expensive if you can't do your own shopping and cooking, moreover I don't always like eating in communal cafeterias. Wee kitchen and mezzanine (loft) are fine.
He says visual and theatre artists get a larger studio, but it probably depends on what one needs to work.

ah me. How great to see the arts supported that way. It's wonderful. The space is generous, certainly compared to many I've seen online with 12-18Sq.M. It does depend on many factors, especially your field. Writers and researchers are given smaller studios. Here is a link I just found and I was surprised at the sizes, The former “Les Récollets” convent, now an International Scientific and Cultural Reception Centre, is located in Paris’ 10th arrondissement, near Gare de l’Est station.
The overall area of the Centre’s premises totals around 6,800 m2.
As part of its rôle as a reception centre, 81 furnished flatlets and studio/apartments are available, viz:
14 studio flatlets of 25 to 29 m2 used solely for accommodation,
55 units of 30 to 49 m2 for use as accommodation or as accommodation/workspaces,
12 larger studio/apartments, ranging from 50 to 120 m2
The centre operates on a quasi-hotel basis; the flatlets and studio/apartments are furnished and benefit from hotel-like services.
The centre is also home (in around 1,200 m2) to the Ordre des Architectes d’Ile de France, an organisation representing the Corporation of Architects in the Paris region.
In addition, it houses a cultural activities association, whose job it is to bring to life the relations between the centre and its catchment area, the 10th arrondissement. www.centre-les-recollets.com/menu.asp?l=gb

The flatlets and flats are a bit larger than 25 to 29 m2 would let one think - look at how high those ceilings are! As the blogger wrote, that means a loft or mezzanine can be used as a private sleeping area over a work space, and it also means that NON-romantic friends can sleep over if they visit, for a short time. Not that I'm likely to see action as hot as Yuri, at my age...

The blue and green photo above is from the Nuit Blanche 2008 when a musical forest was installed in the garden. I have a couple of photos of my own regarding that.

Maybe I could apply. I am a published writer. And I am a member of the Entraide des travailleurs intellectuels (something like that but I would have to search for my certificate) in the category of writer. So I am a registered French intellectual.
Someone at a prefecture advised me to register. I asked what the benefits would be and she pondered a bit. "You will be entitled to higher medical benefits," she said, "on the same level as peasants."

Thanks for adding your great photos Kerouac, I didn't know this was Nuit Blanche. The lighting is magical. Musical forest? Baz, we are honoured to have a 'registered French intellectual' here. Given all of your books, you would probably be considered a perfect candidate. Since your rent is covered, it wouldn't be hard to live on 50E/day, I could do it. (well, with the odd splurge) Lagatta, I think you underestimate yourself and young Yuri. I'd go for the grey haired man in the photo of the threesome , in the white T-shirt and black jacket. Great face. (towards bottom of blog)

Jazz, I am not certain what Mrs Faz would think of my leaving for 3 months. She goes to England for family visits - but that is only one week. But it is tempting.

Couldn't she snuggle in the same room with you (returning to the Lot to water the plants from time to time)?

Jazz, I am not certain what Mrs Faz would think of my leaving for 3 months. She goes to England for family visits - but that is only one week. But it is tempting. No problem, Baz. Mrs. Faz could be in disguise as your 'project advisor', deeply concerned with the progress of your work and feels that she needs to visit you often...for lengthy visits...working deep into the night to ensure the success of her 'protegee'. This would be accepted for the glory of France! As K. suggests, every now and then one of you could nip back home to water the plants.

I more than suspect hot young Yuri is aux hommes, though he quite well might swing both ways. Yes, the handsome grey haired fellow would be more my type - I'm really no a cougar. Oh, I'd love to get young hotties naked, but just to paint them. Anything else would be in more than dubious taste.
I shall ask Parisian professor friends for secret words to shortlist my application.
Obviously someone will have to feed and pat Renzo and water all my plants - I have many - but I'm sure I could find someone to stay here.
