Your beatnik black aesthetic was a clue, LaGatta.

I have a vague memory of some actress at the Oscars wearing a tuxedo to the ceremony a number of years ago, but I have no idea who it was. Then again, it could have been the French Césars.

Well, I must say most of those royals' dresses were pretty dowdy, especially Princess Anne. Diana looked good in really simple dresses, not the black and white thing with the big bow on the front. And Kate usually looks good too, except for one blue fussy number. As for the two tight jersey dresses -- Beatrice and Sophie Wessex? --

With the awards shows still mostly virtual, some of us are experiencing a red carpet deficiency. Reprising this image of a truly lovely gown perfectly fitting the style and status of its wearer. Bixa should like this one. No outrageous cleavage or hip-high slit in the skirt.

People who enjoy dressing up, and not just for red carpet events, are probably in extreme withdrawal. What gets me are people like Kimby and Bixa (and bjd I think) none of whom I imagine in red carpet getup (perhaps I am wrong) who enjoy looking at these things.

I’m not attracted to the celebrities IN the gowns. It’s the wizardry of the designers who CREATE the gowns that I appreciate. (Or more often, disdain.)

Some day I will visit the Paris fashion museum and make a report about it after being extremely impressed. After all, I already did that with the Calais Lace Museum.

I am not actually interested in either the clothes or the celebrities. I just enjoy making snarky remarks about them.

Bjd is my kinda girl! Re: dressing up ~ I don't own any of that kind of clothing, but if called upon to wear it, I am ready. I will assume the mantle, so to speak.

I have kept half a dozen ties from my former life but I don't expect to ever use them, even in my coffin.

I have never had a long dress in my life -- I managed to escape all fads and occasions where one would have been necessary. I have never had any stiletto heels either so I'll leave the mantle-assuming to Bixa.

Emerald Fennell‘s flowery frilly gown looks a lot like my prom dress from 1971. UGLY!

This one I like how understated it is, although the fabric is quite luxurious. Mostly I like that the woman seems to have chosen it for herself, to suit her style. Everything else looks like costumes from 1960s Star Trek, if that show had had a better budget -- i.e., more money, but still the same hokey sense of design.

Thanks for that People link. I had already seen everything shown there except for Margot Robbie, who looks fabulous. That is a gorgeous gown and she is wearing it, not vice-versa.
It's a shame about Regina King's dress -- beautiful fabric in a lovely color, exquisite fit and detailing, & she wears it well, but it's still in with the theme of Queen of Outer Space. Well, maybe Butterfly Queen of Outer Space.

I had been waiting for these comments. Not much to say -- they are all dreadful except for Margot Robbie who would probably look good dressed in a garbage bag. What's with the cut-out midriffs?
I would like to have seen the guy in the fuschia pink suit standing beside the woman in the blue sparkly jumpsuit!

I'm just thinking that events like this have been few and far between over the last 14 months, so they breathe a tiny bit of life into the fashion industry, as unnecessary as it is at this level in terms of ordinary life.
Naturally, the actresses who wear these relatively ridiculous outfits receive a lot of goodies from the desighers, so that probably makes it worth it for a few hours of discomfort.

I only liked the same dress that Bixa liked as well. The only long dresses I have ever worn were when I was a bride and when I was a bridesmaid, all were uncomfortable. But, I always loved wearing the shoes!
(I wore stiletto shoes at work while carrying 60 pound boxes, of course that was very early on in my career, but I wore heels everyday to work)

I saw a few pictures of the awards of the Korean actors from the film Minari. They looked the classiest, mostly in black and nothing over the top.

It was requested that in light of the international situation, nobody should wear extravagant outfits. Not everyone received the memo.

Well! My usual preface being that I have never heard of most of these people, I can repeat it. Most of those outfits are awful. All the low-cut ones, without exception, are completely unflattering being cut too low. I thought the high leg-slits were long over with. The only classy ones were somebody Appleton with a high-necked black dress and the completely opposite summery dress on Milicent Simmonds, which I liked too.
I thought most actors kept their own names now but "Bimini Bon-Boulash"!?? WTF?
