I can see it! My eyes! My eyes To get the positive comments out of the way first ~ Jean Smart looks fabulous! Most of those bimbos there should be bowing down in front of her. Elle Fanning is adorable. Love her ironic "glamour" hairdo & the gown which gives the nod to the reason she's at the Emmys. This is not meant to be unkind, but I was somewhat shocked at Melanie Lynskey's weight gain. She is an immensely underrated actress who never seems to get the big roles she should have been getting all these years. As for the rest, ugh. Some are boring, some are silly &/or self-consciously outlandish, none are classy or even truly fashion-forward. Do these damn women not realize what COWS they look like with that tiresome leg slit and the hose-less toes splaying out of high heeled sandals. Most of the men are trying way too hard and failing badly. Ditto what you said, Kimby, about Laura Linney's outfit. She looks like a lady judge from a 1960s Star Trek episode. I'm sitting here typing this in an ancient, badly frayed bed shirt topped with a shapeless muu muu style house coat. My unpedicured feet are shod in ugly rubber mules. My hair has not been combed since around noon today. And yet I feel more pulled together than most of those people gracing the Emmy red carpet!

I don't know what to say about Megan Stalter & her dress beyond, "What was she thinking?!" I realize that we're all supposed to be "body positive" now and of course people shouldn't suffer self hatred for being overweight or whatever. But a) What she is wearing would look like shit on even the most perfect body, and b) ........... someone else can fill in b.
Agree with you about Zendaya. She looks glamorous, pretty, & appropriate and I love her hair.

Not only are most of those clothes horrible and unflattering but those names! I thought the time when people had to change their names to Rock, Tab and Rip were over and done with -- Opus, Dichen... And that picture of the trio with RuPaul (shouldn't he be in drag?) look like a poster for the Munsters.
Okay, body positivity is one thing but it looks as though some of those women are celebrating weight gain. Especially that wavy gold dress.

A lot of us didn’t know her till now!
Apparently she’s a comedienne. In the Melissa McCarthy (funny fat girl) mode.
Can’t unsee that fashion statement.

I have always liked Zendaya, but I am outraged once again that she is being lauded as the first black woman to win the best actress Emmy twice. She is of mixed race, but apparently the United States is still applying the one-drop rule to her ethnicity, just like with Barack Obama. This is sad.

Apparently the Brits do, too, to listen to Meghan Markle. Her son has one black grandparent, but was too black to be made a prince soon after birth.

Well, I scrolled through them all again. Why bother posting pictures of the men since most of them look the same with a couple of exceptions like the guy with weird bell-bottoms, weird everything in fact. Are they supposed to be wearing white after Labour Day?
Very few of the women look okay -- there are altogether too many leg slits, meaning they have to stand crookedly to show it off. In the case of Lizzo, she should keep her leg inside. Too many dresses with cutouts in various places, one with both cutouts and a leg slit. And I don't like the look of a short dress with a long mass of material behind -- just unbalanced and overdone. And so many dresses which might otherwise be alright are cut too low in front.

Agree with everything you said, bjd.
The few dresses I like (besides Zendaya’s which I love) are the slip-like gowns with slim straps and ideally bias cut. The young ladies who wear them have more mature tastes than the supposedly mature women who tart up with costumes that make me cringe
And remind me of The Emperor’s New Clothes”…are the designers deliberately messing with them, and with us? Or are they just bored?

The men are shown only for their faces. Looking good, looking old, looking tired, looking fat.... That's all that counts. I don't know who most of these people are since I watch almost no American television programmes or series, but I did see that Taron Egerton looked alarmingly bloated. As for the women, some of them should be put in the fashion penitentiary, obviously starting with Megan Stalter, whoever she is.

I would fail one of those "match the face to the name" quizzes with the majority of these celebrities or stars or artists -- whatever they are.
Absolutely agree with Bjd's take on the "fashions" and Kimby's comment of "supposedly mature women who tart up with costumes" is perfect. It sums up what is wrong with women who want to be taken seriously, who profess to be feminists, yet instead of showing up dressed appropriately choose to wear stupidly coy peek-a-boo garments (ooo, will her breast break free?!) or clumsily display a leg -- something that hasn't been considered shocking since WWI.

Black people are the ones insisting on this today. If the "rule" (however crazy and unscientific it might be) were reversed, there would be essentially no longer be any black people in the US and that would obviously not be in their interest. I guess.

Never mind "their interest". It would in effect erase a people and their identity and culture in a most insulting way.

I get that but it still makes no sense and will never make sense to classify someone who is 7/8 european as being African-American as we do. It's a relic from a deeply racist past where any trace of African ancestry was considered "unpure".

In France we have plenty of black people who are in no danger of disappearing. However, there are more and more people of mixed race, which is totally normal. It doesn't seem to be a problem in Germany or Brazil either.

I can't speak from personal knowledge, but apparently the widely held belief that Brazil's people are all on an equal footing regardless of race (or perceived race) is not true.
When you step back from the idea that anyone who is seen as black is "not as good" as someone seen as white, it makes sense that people with some African ancestry want to self-identify as black in the US. It's a matter of pride and claiming the history behind the designation.

I think people of mixed race will always have an advantage over people who (falsely) claim to be of one race or another.

You are entirely correct, Kimby, and I apologize for getting caught up in something off-topic. As it happens, there is already another thread on race. If anyone cares, he or she can go look for it.

Considering that it is a media invention, that is not surprising. Before they made such a big deal of it all, most of these people just wanted to "dress nicely" for special events, not create a media buzz. I presume it was all set off by feuding Hollywood actresses trying to outshine each other. Then it turned into a cross between Mardi Gras and Halloween.
