I quickly went through the Bafta pictures -- a bit better although there were a couple of doozies there too. There were some real uggos in the "fashion" department -- Cate Blanchett looks like a dominatrix on her day off, for instance. For just plain confusing, the award goes to Fantasia Barrino. The only look I really liked was that of Molly Sims, Emma Stone looked awful, though. Whoever her dresser is must hate her & had been plotting revenge. I sort of like Margot Margot Robie’s pink and black gown. You didn't automatically think, "Lone Ranger!" ? I was kind of impressed by the outfit on Da'Vine Joy Randolph. When you have a body like that, there is no longer any point in being discreet I agree -- that's my point about being able to pull off a look with the sheer force of ones celebrity and personality.

Bixa, Lone Ranger was the farthest thing from my mind! I’m assuming you mean the mask/like bodice?

Hetero men are so lucky they are completely outside the grasp of the fashion world. Have at it, ladies!

Using the people numbering (and largely ignoring the men because…”best dress”… 1. Brie Larson’s peachy gown shows off her stunning figure. But I’d love it more if they closed up that gap with some fabric, even sheer peach fabric. 3. Da’Vine Joy Randolph didn’t get the memo about big girls and too much fabric. It’s a pretty gown, though. Maybe lose the big bouquet on the left shoulder. 4. Margot Robbie, enough already with the pink. We KNOW you are Barbie! Or go bold and skip the black and commit to a pink gown. Meanwhile, ditch that waterfall of bubblegum over your shoulder. Or at least cut it off at the (too-high) hem of your mini dress. Only thing that could make this worse would be elbow length black gloves! 4. Selena Gomez. Nice shape, but reminds of lingerie of the foundation garments kind! (I’ll be back after lunch to finish this) Oh no!! I was merrily bashing along and had just got to #60 when an errant touch deep sixed my commentary! I’m too demoralized to recreate all my snarky commentary, so suffice it to say that Jennifer Anniston and Reese Witherspoon both looked great and my favorite gown is #52 Halle Bailey.

Well, I admit the French awards were a study in black, but in general the clothes were a bit more discreet than the SAGs.
The worst overall have to be the Grammy awards, but I do wish they would stop with the leg sticking out of a long slit. And just as you expect women wearing uncomfortable shoes to kick them off as soon as possible, in the case of many of these outfits, I imagine they heave a sigh of relief once they get those tight tops compressing their breasts removed and they can finally breathe.
And there were a couple of dresses that looked like plastic. What was that about?

A couple of my favorites from the SAG awards. The runner up. Would have been improved with tiny capped sleeves, but love that red black velvet skirt. The winner, love the way this satin catches the light. And a reprise of my other favorite, which reminds me of one of the prom gowns I had for my stereotypical Barbie.

I agree with you about that lush velvet and its magical color. Don't agree about the cap sleeves, though. What would have improved it would have been a better cut, less eccentric bodice. All these damned dresses are deliberately too small in the bosom, or something mimicking an outfit in a super hero comic, or something from a sado-masochistic fantasy.
As a member of that half of the population who must consider breasts when buying clothes, I look at all those women who parade the red carpet wearing dresses in which you know damned well they don't dare lean over and sort of despise them for continuing to pander to the big-tits-on-display-is-sexy bullshit.
And that doesn't really fit thing is what mars Halle Bailey's dress, along with the hideous color. She of course can carry off that cut (which I do like, as it reminds me of ornamental goldfish), but it's obvious that the dress was made for her with the bosom area designed to just barely fit.
Carey Mulligan looks fabulous, really stunning because of her bearing and how she makes the dress hers -- you can't imagine anyone else wearing it.

I love the fabric of the red velvet number...but the skirt seems too big for the bodice.
I agree about the bodices being too tight on many of the dresses...the male actors look good in their posh suits. Maybe all the ladies could wear them too.

Yes..I think that a few women do wear posh suits to many of these events.
The dresses all look very uncomfortable, the scaffolding underneath must be torture. A lot of the shoes look very difficult to walk in.

I LOVE the color, a sort of raspberry purée, which beats all the blacks and silvers I’m getting so tired of

I am SO OVER strapless gowns, and not just on the red carpet. Almost no actual brides look good in strapless gowns, and they certainly don’t look virginal, which is what the white gown traditionally represents. (We could do a whole ‘nuther thread on Bridal Gowns you Love. Or Hate.)

*shudder* But there are so many colors in the world, why that one?
Here is something we can agree on. I finally went all the way through the People pictures and have picked out the ugliest, stupidest, & probably most uncomfortable dress in a forest of grotesque designs: https://people.com/thmb/Q1H4N6yJ12khSu31iSUePQJOVbM=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(599x0:601x2):format(webp)/lisa-ann-walter-sag-arrivals-2024-3fc9da19d2f1402eb742b8f2783e68f6.jpg <-- copy/paste

Isn't it dreadful? WHY would a person do this, or let it be done to herself?!

I was particularly struck by how tasteless this was compared to the stylish person immediately before her in the people link, Carey Mulligan.
