Well, there will be no leap year in 2100, but who will even still exist then?

No, Htmb, because even thought we are deep into Feb, I did not realize that it had the pesky extra day this year until last night. Perhaps it should have gone into "something I learned today", for those who are policing the posts of others.

Fascinating history & full of bits that need further chasing down.
re: the band of women patrolling on a ridge in order to fool the invaders into thinking there was a large force up there ~ I just read a book about the struggle for independence in Algeria where the same technique was used in the early 1950s.
The British would be justified in thinking the hand of God saved them from all the planned landings of the invaders, just as with the Spanish Armada.

In 1895 at Adua in Ethiopia a large European army was defeated by an African army. It was the first victory of an indigenous rally of fighters against a well organised colonial army. Italians lost about 70% of their troops (5000 dead 8000 wounded and prisoners) and 5 of 6 of their top officers. A major disaster. Upon studying the battle much more credit than was actually the case must be given to the Ethiopians who fought bravely, well coordinated and well led. Italians would return later. With tanks and planes.

But what about Custer's last stand in 1876? Of course, far fewer forces involved.

No Africans there... 😄 The US are satisfied with much less... only hundreds of casualties and only one ranking officer.
Also the Italians didn't systematically attack the wives and children of the Ethiopians...

Today is the anniversary of in 1984 the beginning of the ill fated and divisive Miner's Strike, bullied into existence by the arrogance of the shredded wheat haired tin-pot dictator Arthur Scargill that turned families against each other, destroyed the livelihood of thousand of workers, led to many areas becoming economically depressed, destroyed communities and community spirit and propped up the gloating grocer's daughter from Grantham enough to be elected for a third term.

Ah, the good old days! That is an interesting historical fact, which made me go look up stuff about child labor. Don't even read this article if you prefer not to have horrifying images in your mind. While googling around, I came across a small excerpt of the book Child Labor Reform in Nineteenth-Century France: Assuring the Future Harvest, by Lee Shai Weissbach, which referenced Jean-Jacques Bourcart. He was an important reformer, but I can only find information on him in French: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Jacques_Bourcart

Eid Mubarak was always a nice thing to say to our Muslim friends and colleagues today. They have never had any problem saying things like "Merry Christmas" to us.

Today is the 32nd anniversary of Disneyland Paris, the most visited (paid) site in Europe with 15 million visitors (The Louvre is #2 with 8 million visitors and it doesn't even have any rides.).
Also the Disney Studios park is changing name and becoming Disney Adventure World.
