The Royal Family has a shit job. Please don't tell me having the best of this and that, makes up for all the work you HAVE TO DO! I think Princess Anne would straighten out the lot of them. She is extremely down to earth.

They were all older than him, and went off to marry German aristocrats when their parents' marriage broke up in the late 20s. One died with her husband in a plane crash in 1937. Of the other husbands, one was an Army officer invalided out after being wounded in France, one was an Army officer wounded in Russia and dismissed following the July 1944 plot, and the one who seems to have been a convinced Nazi died in a plane crash in 1944. I hope the family kept their Christmas cards for posterity.

On TV recently...a party of tourists doing the tour through some aristocrat's palace. The guide drew everyone's attention to a "charming" Christmas card standing alone on a small decorated table. Inscribed within was "To the [Bloggs family] from Lilibet and Philip."
I wondered if Hyacinth Bucket (That's Bookay to you) was living there.

As expected the terrestrial tv channels and all the radio stations are showing archive footage of the royal couple. The radio stations were the same during the night.
Whilst I can sort of understand the loyalty and love that the nation has for the queen and the duke, I don't think that her offspring engender anything like as much respect. Anne works pretty hard but I think that she'd survive life in the real world. The sons seem pretty useless. Hopefully if/when Charles does succeed his mother he will be a reformer and cut away the chaff. As for William and Kate...they seem ok but really....it's not normal is it? Royalty.

The royalty in places like Scandinavia have it much easier. They have a nice castle to live in and a substantial stipend I imagine, but they can do things like take public transportation because nobody knows who they are. But of course they don't really do anything like normal people anyway, and they're so inbred it's appalling.

Hopefully if/when Charles does succeed his mother he will be a reformer and cut away the chaff. Cheery, I have always loved the Royals as a whole, because I see the mountains of cash they bring to Great Britain. Just like popular actors in a life-long movie. BUT, when I hear things about Prince Charles that I think are totally ridiculous I hope he never makes it to be king of England. What things? Well, some of us have 'help' around the house if were lucky, and of course he has a Batman to assist with his appearance. But does the poor man have to put exactly one inch of toothpaste on Prince Charles' tootbrush - or iron his pyjamas before he wears them again - or run his bath to a an exact temperature using a thermometer - and the worse one of all is - he has his shoelaces ironed! I think he needs a week or two with Bear Grylls. We all have our little habits but he seems weak and incapable of looking after himself. No, I think rather lets skip to William.

Problem with skipping Charles and making William King is that it will limit the time that William has to spend with his family. Elizabeth had her 2nd family to do the working mother experience as she realised that she had hardly had much time with her little ones as she learnt her "Queen" role. Let Wills get to 25years old and Charles to keep the throne warm till then.

Or maybe it's just time to call it quits. I'll vote for any royal who can solve the Irish crisis, though.

I agree. The mindset is peculiar to me, but then also is a person going to the Witchdoctor to throw the bones and then calling in at the Pharmacy later to get some relief from what ails them.

Wills is in his thirties isn't he?
Charles is unpopular partly because of Diana. It seems ridiculous now that he decded to marry such a shy young woman with whom he had nothing in common, expecting her to be the quiet, dutiful brood mare whilst he carried on as if he was still a batchelor seems crazy. Nobody really knows what went on in that marriage, but Diana was very popular. Camilla is almost as unopular as Charles. Andrew is a liability and Edward a bit wet. If Anne had been first born it would have been better imo.
Charlie boy won't step aside for Wiliam. He's been waiting in the wings for too long and will probably be able to cope with the job very well.

At least Charles won’t be king for 6 decades! I think it may be good for the royals to have a younger generation leader, and William and Catherine seem temperamentally suited to the job, don’t they?

William and Catherine are as boring as can be. I'm actually grateful to them because after Charles is gone, my embarrassing fascination with the British royal family can finally disappear. I love Charles and Camilla, but really really really love the queen. Not everything in my life needs to make sense, you know.

If you want to know who mucked up the Royals, look no further than that old bitch the Queen Mother. She carried hate and resentfulness all her life for her husband's early death which she blamed on the strain of being king...the fact that he smoked 40-50 cigarettes a day never got a mention. She ruled the Family and was instrumental in breaking Margaret's affair with Townshend and plotted to push Diana onto Charles. She did not allow the girls to get any education except for 'how to sit, walk etc like a lady.' It wasn't until she was Queen that Liz hired a tutor to teach her to High school levels.
It is common knowledge that the QM favoured Hitler's cause and thought him "a nice gentleman". It was she who pushed for Charles to go to Gordonstoun school. She had a circle of upper class ladies who kept her up with all the gossip and she interfered in many decisions that were made. Her hatred of the Windsors lasted to her death.
The general public loved her, perhaps she reminded them of their own grandmother, with a sweet smile. As one Writer said, "Why, she looks like somebody's little German cook!"

I agree with you Questa - Besides the strong persuasive power the old Queen Mother had, She neglected her own appearrance - bodily that is. She dressed superbly but when it came to smiling at the public....oh dear. Those nicotine stained teeth looked like something from a Frankenstein film. Too ghastly for words. Now, if she was a broke old washerwoman, or the little German cook with little money I could understand the neglect. But the woman had millions and access to the best medical care. Why did no-one, especially her daughters, say "Mum you need your teeth cleaned"!!

One can still marvel at the bravery of the first Russians and Americans to go into space. They had no idea if they were ever coming back or if they would end up like Laïka (1954-1957). At least she got a stamp, just like a number of the human space heroes. After all, she didn't even volunteer.
