TV showing heart-warming images of the nursing home ladies in warm dry clothes at a nursing home in another city. Mission accomplished!
Meanwhile 10's of thousands of 911 calls for rescues from attics and roofs in Houston and the mayor still claims he made the right call telling people not to evacuate. Could be true, since being caught in a vehicle on flooded roads might be more deadly than waiting for rescue on your roof in a downpour.

Watching the devastation on tv atm...people have been struggling for five days now. Many people still trapped with no power, no clean water and no food or medical supplies. Heartbreaking.

I am in the US right now, in a hotel in Texas. I've barely looked at the news, but because this is my third hotel stop since Sunday, I've seen the footage about Houston on various breakfast room tv sets. The devastation in south Asia seems to have been shoved aside, & I only learned about that online.
Ironically, I traveled toward the hurricane, or at least its western edge, as I flew into San Antonio on Sunday. My poor sister who met me there, drove up from her home on the Texas/Mexico border, so spent hours going through the Harvey-generated rains.

Mr. Kimby said that of 20 projected storm paths for Irma, ALL 20 have her making landfall on South Florida. And probably as a Category 4 because it looks like she will stay over open water, gathering strength, all the way in.
I hope Sanibel dodges this bullet. Between fires in Montana and hurricanes in Florida, both our homes could be in jeopardy at the same time....

We are several rows of houses inland from the shoreline, on a lot that is 3' above sea level. Our house is on stilts that put the floor 11' above sea level, though we have a small storage room/workshop below that has "breakaway walls per code. We also now have a car under the house, as we inherited Mr. Kimby's mom's car this spring and parked it there.
I think we are probably in more danger from wind than from high water. When Charlie hit 13 years ago, we were lucky to only lose a few shingles while half of our neighbor's roof blew off and rain soaked the interior and furnishings so that everything had to be replaced. We probably should have replaced our roof this year, but didn't.
BTW, we dropped wind and flood insurance a couple years ago since the premiums keep going up and the coverage is minimal. As a 2nd home, we wouldn't be devastated financially to lose it, and the things that would be devastating to lose can't be replaced by insurance anyway.
Fingers crossed.

3 hurricanes all at the same time. JOSE AND KATIA have been upgraded to Hurricane 1, Irma remains a 5.
Scary days ahead...

Anyway, Irma is set to visit Miami on Sunday. That will of course get the greatest media coverage. I can only imagine that the people in Texas are greatly grieved (don't want to say "furious") that all attention has already been taken away from them, even though with all of the flooding, the losses will still remain far higher than anything that can happen in Florida/Georgia/the Carolinas. I hope I am wrong.

I never thought of Gulf hurricanes affecting you because I thought that various mountains would block the weather systems. On the other hand, I can easily imagine Pacific cyclones affecting you, except for the fact that most of them arrive on the coast much farther north.

For the most part you are correct. But you can see in the linked map that something as big as Katia & positioned as it is would push rain my way. Mick, you've visited some of those affected islands, right? I am wondering how Huckle is getting along.

A friend of mine was studying wine making and laying down 'special' wines in a cellar under her house, couple of bottles at a time. The cellar flooded and most of the labels floated off. It was not a 'good year' for her.
