There's practically nothing happening in the Atlantic this year. Is it all building up for a big splurge in September and October?

Is it? Is that the season for hurricanes? I don't know anything about hurricanes.

Is that why the US is having a heat wave? That should affect Europe as well, right?
There are no Pacific storms building either. It's the storms that build off the coast of Oaxaca that bring rain here. We're in the midst of the rainy season, yet also in the midst of a drought. We got a somewhat decent rainfall yesterday, but it's been brutal here.

There was a piece in Thursday's paper here about this, didn't read. But,the headline read something along the lines of a lower than average season. Will try to rustle it up. It is still early yet, and I will leave it at that.

Where or where are our monsoons? They've gone away, what do we say, to have them come back and give us some relief from this mindless heat??? Do we shriek, do we dance, do we just throw up our hands and turn on the fans? Do we strip and fall into the pool, just to try and stay cool? I don't know what else to do,but end on this line and go get another glass of wine.

The typhoon season has started here. But they're all going north from the Philippines instead of west. We haven't had rain for 10 days and it's getting hot again.

Did anybody see that hotel in Taiwan collapse into the water?

I just saw the news story about Taiwan. This story is from a half hour ago. It has a video of the hotel collapse. And another storm has slammed into Japan.

First named tropical storm of the season,Ana,out in the Atlantic.Way too soon to tell which way she'll blow. Behind her a much, much larger system yet to organize itself.

We had a monsoonish-like storm 2 nights ago, the only storm I have seen this summer (although there might have been one or two while I was away for a week last month.) DD lives in Tucson, and according to her, it appears you all have had far more rain than we have. We have had so many days where we wake up thinking that it will rain...but then are disappointed. I am so done with summer.

T63 -- more hidden talent! I caught myself desperately wishing the other day that a storm would build off the coast, then realized I was mentally calling down devastation on another populace so that we could get some rain.

It's supposed to be a terrible year for El Niño, so there should be tons of devastation everywhere -- particularly in Asia, where it has already begun.

Tropical Storm # 2,Bill,big. I may end up going to N.Y. much sooner then intended but then, where I'll be the bulk of the time is also one of the most vulnerable, prone areas for hurricane hits.

Thanks Bixa I am always a little leery of weather predictions because you have to be careful what you wish for. Hurricane season has been quiet this year so far but hopefully it won't make up for it later. Monsoon rain in Tucson is hard t predict because the office count is at the airport and boy can that be off as different areas get more or less rain. I have actually seen it rain on one side of the street and the sun will be out on the other! Also, there have been many times when the TV weatherman or woman would say no chance of rain and while we have been watching it is raining in our area.+

What does the angle with the x in it and the word "four" above it mean?

What does the angle with the x in it and the word "four" above it mean? That is Tropical Depression #4 and the area that is under a watch or warning. If it develops into a Tropical Storm it will be #3,Claudette.

Big round of applause to Claudette! It's hard to become a storm when you're stuck in a corner.

K, that map you've been posting is from France or somewhere in Europe.? Do y'all refer to all hurricanes as cyclones? They're never referred to as cyclones here.

Errrr... I get all of this from the U.S. government site which calls them by the official meteorological name while still deferring to the 'hurricane' word for its principal audience.

I tell you what -- if I'm going to get wiped out by a meteorological event, I'd certainly prefer that it be named Claudette rather than Bill. Bill is just so un-hurricaney

If there are going to be any more hurricanes this season, I'd just as soon they stay in the Atlantic with Bill. I wouldn't want to go through another season like 2004, and that was cake compared to what New Orleans went through in 2005.

Not only will there be more hurricanes, but they will all drift across the Atlantic and become major rainstorms or tempests in Europe in a week or two.
